Currently using three SKS accessory water bottle mounts on a 1982 Raleigh Competition GS. Have thought about brazing in proper bottle mounts, but don't want to damage the paint patina on the bike. Does anyone know of accessory water boittle mounts that are not as bulky as the SKS mounts? Something less obvious?

Thanks for the suggestion, Markwesti, however I am not a fan of rivnuts and have the ability to braze anyway, so if I drill the frame it will get brazed-in threaded inserts. Am hoping for suggestions to lower profile and less bulky than the SKS mounts.

Presume the SKS ones are the critter with a couple of cable ties holding them on ?
I have used the DMR clamps in the past and like them . MAybe still a bit obvious ?

Thanks for this information. I am going to try this on some cheaper frames and if I do not mess up, I might try this on my Raleigh Comp GS and/or Gitane TdF. I watched RJ the Bike Guy's video: and it looked pretty good.

What about the old-school band clamp things?


They do away completely with the bolt holding on the cage, and can often achieve a very low-profile mounting, like so:

IIRC the old Specialized stainless ones were the best, having a dimple formed in them that would positively locate the clamp on the bottle cage bolt hole to minimize slippage.

...I've been gradually replacing some of my bar mounted water bottle cages, because I prefer to mount a bar bag there. And there's rarely room for both. Here is a list of all the bottle cage moung adapters I found on Amazon, but thus far the only one I can say works well from personal experience is the Topeak. I haven't yet mounted the others. They look like they ought to work.

Huh, I had the band clamps holding on an old aluminum Blackburn cage for about 350 days of touring, and it was one of the few things on the bike that _didn't_ break. Underlaid the cage with a piece of electrical tape to avoid marring the paint. Might've helped with grip. But the bands were bare on the painted frame tube.

...to be clear, that Topeak adapter is a pillar mount with a stainless steel band clamp that fastens inside the pillar. It's padded with rubber, or in this case, a piece of inner tube. Band clamps come in all shapes and sizes, but I've had the most success with those that can be torqued down pretty tightly, and padding them with rubber from old inner tubes.

Just another thought.....
Use the threaded insert, but 'glue' them in for now...
So here is a long list on metal epoxies. some of this stuff is as good as brazing an insert. Just use the first JB-Weld instead of brazing, then when it's time to repaint... heat things up, pop out the insert, clean and braze it in at the time you repaint the whole frame.

Brazing in water bottle bosses is one of the simpler framebuilder jobs. The only downside of course is that your paint is now ruined. On the upside, if your Comp GS is a black model, @Andy_K knows the exact Rustoleum spray match. It's so good a match that it passes the 5' eyeball test.

Zefal Gizmos are a nice trick too; low risk to your painted tubes.

Put this or something similar on your handlebar. Works great, your bottle is easy to grab, and no damage to your paint unless you crash, at which point you have bigger problems to worry about.

I prefer a bar mount myself . It is easier for me to grab and the bottle stays cleaner, nothing worse than reaching down(without thinking) and using your teeth to pull open the spigot and feeling grit in your teeth. This is usually on damp roadways but it happens. I use whatever the bike I am riding on has but much prefer bar mount. My Competition GS came with hose clamp type mount that was fortunately pro mounted at the Cupertino Bike shop where it was purchased so the clamps had a "gasket" . No marks on the original paint when I removed them. I modified a drink holder from a beach cruiser to accept a water bottle.In this case I was heading out for a long ride so the Sub Zero SS water "tank" fit just fine!

It ain't the prettiest but it works!

It passes the 1 foot test with my eyeballs. I thought I had spotted a flaw once, but it turned out to be a remnant of the original decal further up the tube than I had painted

BTW, it's just Rust-Oleum Gloss Black Enamel. No special shade. Black is black, apparently.

Scarlson, I am such a dope!! I forgot all about those H2O clamps from the old days. Installed hundreds of them and I forgot all about them. They are less intrusive than the SKS that I have. Will be ordering eight of them soon! Thanks for the reminder, I owe you one.
