edit: i stand corrected (informed) - the use of the word 'axle' seems common in these listings for cottered spindles. Semantics, as a BB spindle is without doubt an axle, but a narrower category of axles.
I was going to say, it seems to be the other way around in the car world. My VW Bug has spindles in the front that are stationary, rear axles that turn because they are powered.

The only seller I've encountered for cottered crank axles (and they call them axles) is SJS Cycle in UK. I've never bought an axle (or spindle) from them but have bought a bunch of stuff for old SA hubs and Carradice bags and tires and other stuff that they seem to have but nobody else does. Their service is good and shipping is ok -- they don't gouge.

Depending on what you need, you may have no choice on the silly part.

If you happen to need a particular Stronglight, French or Italian 70 or 74mm, good luck, these can literally be the definition of "hens teeth".

That's just an eBay search. Supposedly, that shop's site got hacked, then got turned into a site that just displays eBay links in some sort of money making scheme.

However, if you were a paid member, you could post a Wanted to Buy in our active sales thread. If you have the measurements, there might be some low hanging fruit.
