As coincidence would have it, I had bought this 6400 group about the time of this post. It arrived today and I thought that it would be appropriate to post the photos. Note, the brake levers are 6401 for some reason.

That is one clean group! That's the 7 speed...visibly, the front derailleur and the brake calipers are different from the 8 speed. I can't tell any difference between the 6400 and 6401 rear derailleurs. The brake levers are 6401 but the 7 speed dt are 6400. The 8 speed dt shifters are 6401. That looks really nice! What's it going on?

Beautiful group. I see you've got the flat backing collar, and are missing one.
If you plan to put that on a steel bike, you may need a set of the concave backing collars.
Perhaps someone here can track down a set for you?

The only difference I know of in the RD's of the 6400 series is in the outer pulley cage. I've seen the "solid" outer cage as pictured on Jeff's group, and I've seen the "see-through" outer cage. Anyone know which/when? Or have an example of the tricolor RD without the "solid" outer pulley cage?

Some of my collection.
I have 2 complete other then hubs 600 Arabesque groups. Unfortunatly not in the best of shape. This is the Ross weird set with the triple cranks.
Near new condition Tri Color Crank set in box. Mid 90's 8 speed

Near new condition 8 speed short Tricolor RD

Looking for a matching front derailleur a, heck whole group but those two pieces are the hardest to find in that condition.

I also have a complete including hubs 105SC group with brifters and a couple extra bits including a newer triple. Really like that stuff. The understate logos on the SC before they put that cartoonish yellow 105 logo on it I like much better . For the time being it may end up on the OPUSIII

I have a 600 group floating around in my stash somewhere, that seems to be fit between the 85ish flat grey and tricolor. though I have rarely seen it anywhere else. The RD looks JUST like the 85ish EX, but has a clear plastic plate, with internal raised chrome letters. It doesn't seem to be index compatible either, IE no floating upper jockey wheel. I hooked it up to an indexed shifter and it wouldn't shift correctly. I am going to try and find it today, although that may be a monumental task, hehe.,,,,BD

The One I just posted is a TA date code (Jan 95) and a 6401 model.

Oh and how about a real oddity?? Has anyone ever seen a set of CLAMP ON 600 tricolor shifters? I don't recognize the clamping band, and it's not the older type. the mounting bases are slotted to fit the band. They're the dark grey gloss, shaped like tricolor, and they're SIX speed indexed. The cables go in from the inner edge near the base, and have a little matching plastic clip cover to hide the cable end. I got them in a jumble of parts a while back. pics coming as well for these.,,,,BD

The underside of one of the shifters is stamped SL-6400

The solid cage/aero cage is the RD-6400, 7 speed rear derailleur. The 8 speed RD-6401 has the see-though/tragitional cage. The changeover took place in 1992.

Band/clamp mount shifters were still offered the with the 7 speed version but disappeared with the introduction of 8 speed. It was intended primarily as an upgrade option for older frames. Remember , SIS was only entering it's 4th year when 600 Ultegra was introduced, so there was still a relatively large retro-fit market

I picked up a mistreated ’88 Miyata 912. The original 6400 group is very ugly, but the frame is straight and dent free. While the frame will never be a real beauty again, citrus stripper and polishing compound is bringing back to life that tough Miyata finish. Maybe one day I’ll see if I can find decals for it. I was quite fortunate to find this beautiful 6400 group which included a Wolber T 430 Alpine wheelset that was original to the ’88 912. Regardless of how the frame finish comes out, this clean 6400 group will make this one ugly bada*s ride.

If your post is intended just for Southpaw, PMs are generally better.

can we please stop talking about shimano 600?

it is easily the best deal in vintage parts. pick your part, you can generally get them for $5-$10. cranks for under $25 most of the time.

As mint as that group is it would definitely be worth some decals and a new paint job! Either way it will be a great bike. Enjoy it!

I have an 8 spd 105 group that has the solid cage, so maybe that only applied to the 600 groups? the group came off of a Nishiki TT bike ,,,,BD

Pics of the 6 speed index shifters soon. I didn't get pics of the RD. I spent most of the day out, and it's nearly dark Possibly tomorrow after I glue the second tubular for the Ace.

It isn't, and you're gonna get me in hot water. See if you can shrink it to "PM me, I have a tricolor group."
