1951 CCM Club Racer - crank issues
17014 C is the serial number.
It's turquoise and very pretty... completely original except it's missing the BSA 3 speed shifter parts. I have pictures but have to find my USB cable first to post them. It looks like the same frame that Clubman posted here, except it's got all the lovely bits still on it... white fenders, sexy drop bards and a hard-ass leatheries saddle. It also came with a massive headlight and a dynamo. The original grips are mostly intact too.
It has a crank that looks like this one*,I think it's a Bayliss Wiley... not too familiar with the pre-50s technology... Anyway, the left side nut spun off without trouble and the crank slipped right off, however the right side seems much better attached... the nut came off fine but the arm is quite well attached to the spindle. Not quite sure if I want to hammer on it so it's just kind of hanging off the bike right now. Is it just a matter of getting the pickle fork on it and being careful?

Well that crank came off easily after all, couple of taps with a hammer... guess it was just dried grease keeping me from pulling it off by hand.

For future maintenence projects, you may want to use a penetrating spray or other form of lube on the parts in advance of disassembly. It might make things easier and help breakdown old hard grease and so forth.
Glad you didn't have to resort to anything drastic ! Looking forward to seeing some pictures...

Joe

The pictured crankset is a CCM Prolite. These were not OEM for early 1950s CCM Club Racers, which came with a lower grade (i.e. swaged), cotterless, CCM Special crankset. Either the crankset is a replacement or the bicycle could be a better model. I anxiously await pictures. In the meantime, check the seat post diameter.

Yeah, the crank on my club racer is definitely swaged on and not a bolt-on like the one I linked to but it still uses a similar looking triangular spindle. I'm currently repacking the bottom bracket; going to have to soak the pedals in OA. The paint is in remarkable shape except for the scratches along the top tube. No major frame rust from what I've seen. I have the original lights too but the bulbs are all broken... I hope the bottle generator works. The seatpost, or more like seatpin feels like 7/8" or something like that.

There's no doubt to the model. A 7/8" seat pin would be correct. It's in much better condition that you typically see.

That is one sweet machine clasher! Whoah! I have a CCM mixte that I've been riding for a couple weeks now, but it is nowhere as nice as your club racer.

The hub is jerry-rigged with a broken chain that's got a piece of wire holding it in gear. The bottom bracket is all cleaned up and getting fresh grease. I have all the rust removed from the crank too. The tires aren't too cracked either so it might be rideable today. I can take more pics of stuff if anyone would like to see.

Nice Clasher...same as mine but my serial is something like 49---C. The handlebars have a great bend to them.
The BSA hub wasn't standard equipment...does the bike have 26 1 1/4" wheels?

Yeah, the wheels are 597 mm with "raleigh racing" tires on them. The front hub is a CCM. The chain side dropout has a small hole on the bottom of the dropout, certainly not a fender eyelet... what was original equipment on this bike?

Here you go. The hole in the dropout is a mount for a Cyclo 3 speed derailleur.

Gorgeous 6 day racer and a different green altogether. I have an original can of CCM touch up paint for that bike. All lead all the time.
Are you sure the serial number isn't hiding around the top of the seat cluster?
The headbadge makes it post WWII....nice pencil stays and all the bits. Whats the wheelset bits? drool
A&P fork crown.

That cotterless crank, with the triangular spindle, is the coolest thing I've seen all day.
I'm pretty sure a Sturmey Archer trigger shifter will work fine.
Looking forward to more photos! Cool bike for sure.

Unfortunately the left side crankarm is rounded out from being ridden loose since it won't tighten up. I still need to finish polishing and de-rusting the brakes and pedals. I polished the paint and waxed the frame and fenders... they look amazing now. The original chain cleaned up nicely and isn't stretched so it's back on the frame. The chrome on the crank shows some damage but it cleaned up nicely. I didn't have to take the original grips off at all but they are showing their age. I'm not sure if there's something out there that I should treat them with.
I only have a crappy indoor pic of it but I think this bike is going to live at the local co-op for display... I did think about putting an SA wheelset on the bike and riding it for a bit but I have too much on my plate right now.

I may have an extra left arm in the basement. I'll PM you if I do.
Otherwise it will take a standard spindle. The frame shows nicely!

Sorry for taking so long to get the pictures up but I did finish this one up, mostly. Just gotta hook up the dynamo and check that it works and it then it shall be a wall hanger for a while. The only new parts are the cables and housing, as well as new bearings in the BB. I'd consider riding it but that crankarm is way too wobbly... I did a few loops of the parking lot and it's not a bad ride at all. The BSA hub is also missing all its shifting parts.

Here are a few pix of a 1952 CCM Club Racer with the derailleur. The derailleur currently on the bike is a Gian Robert; I have acquired a correct CYCLO derailleur for it, I'm not sure if the Italian saddle is original but it is period correct. https://s917.photobucket.com/user/dob...20CLUB%20RACER Cheers
