Which one Mu-p8, vitesse D7 or Xootr Swift?
Hello everyone,
I have been trolling this site for awhile and have finally gotten the funds to purchase a folding bike. I am 5' 8" and weight around 190. Mostly want to use the bike for recreational and getting to and from work (8 mile round trip). My budget is $800.00.
I called NYCEWheels and they gave me three choices for that price range. The Dohan Mu-P8, Vitesse D7 and the Xootr Swift. From what I understand the Dohan models are more "comfy" but feels like a small bike. They also fold into a fairly small package but the many of the part are proprietary. The swift on the other hand feels like riding a big bike, has a stronger more rigid frame making it a rougher ride and does not fold very well. This bike is much more customizable.
I am planing to go to the shop next week but wanted to hear everyones opinion on which bike is a better value. Honestly, I just want a good bike, folding isn't my number one thing.

Yes, those are the choices if you're looking to spend all $800, but who says you have to spend all of that to get a decent bike? Especially if folding is not a necessity.

i have the vitesse d7.
if i had to do it again, i'd save a little extra more money and get the mu p8 or the speed p8. i've seen them listed for between $550 and $700.
i really like my vitesse but i think i would like that mu more. i rode it in a store and it felt more solid than my vitesse d7. of course, me and the d7 are currently having a tiff. some days we love each other, other days i think she's trying to hurt me, or annoy me at the least.
i've found that i'm rougher on my bike than i realized i would be. i think the mu or speed p8 may be a bit tougher.
i have no experience with the xootr.
also, i think i read something about some 2008 dahons having certain problems which might explain why they are still around in stores. i think they were fixed but you have to look for something on the bike... or whatever...
can't believe i of all people actually gave somebody advice on a bike. lol. what do i know?

There was a problem with the handlebar post but it was taken care of under a recall.

Swift. More upgradable or more swappable options for parts and a really nice ride.

Try before you buy. I have ridden both the Swift and Speed P8, which is a sister to the Mu P8 (main difference is Mu P8 is lighter because it has an aluminum, rather than steel, frame). The Dahon folds compactly but it can be a little tedious folding and unfolding--there are a lot of parts to fiddle with. The Swift folds quickly and easily but it has a much larger folded package. On the other hand, when folded, it has a slim profile because the rear wheel folds under the top tube, whereas the Dahon frame folds in half, making it double-width.
At this point in my riding career, I'm more interested in speed and power than a tiny fold. I don't find the Swift uncomfortable to ride, but only you can make that determination. I've never shopped at NYCE Wheels, but they have a good reputation. You might also want to check out bfold in the East Village, where I bought my Swift. They are very knowledgeable about folding bikes and helpful to boot.

Mu-P8 sounds like text-speak for muppet. Just saying.
