Yeah - Target sells sweatshirts for 12-15 bucks sometimes. A polyester vest can be had for similar prices. Living where you are there's no point in handing over all of your money for some high-tech piece of crap plastic coat. If you still insist, go for it.

I was wondering this also, I am in South Mississippi and it rarely gets below 30 here. Humidity is always high though. I need more of a wind jacket than anything. It normally only snows here in late January to early February and only last maybe a day or two. Any suggestions on a medium thickness wind jacket that fits close. I have a thin Northface fleece, but it is too lose for comfortable ridding.

I went ahead and ordered a Hammer thermal jacket. It's not too cheap, but I have always been very pleased with the price quality of their gear. I don't want anything too heavy, and I think this jacket will make it warmer without having to layer up top so much.
I have a wind jacket that I got on a century here a couple of years ago...It holds in too much heat though. It causes me to sweat and contains the heat like a sauna. It doesn't take too long at a stop light to begin to get cold.
Compared to what you guys have up there in upstate NY, no our winters are pretty mild...

Yeah TBlade, I did scoop up a couple of those med weight starter polypro shirts they sell at Wal-Mart. That's what I wear in the mornings now along with a base layer and a Pearl pullover. Even all that though, still lets the cold wind pierce through. We don't have the winters like some of you guys have, but it does get cold and the humidity seems to make it all the more colder.
