the year is half over. goals?
my target for the year was the same as last year - 6,000 miles and 360,000 feet. a little ahead on both fronts. average speed and power are pretty flat, but i think it is what it is. some beautiful rides, some slightly chilly ones, and some very windy ones! that's probably the one thing i'd change, if i was in charge: the wind.
for those who track these things, how's it going?

I'm targeting 5,000 miles, I've never had a goal for climbing. Based on my current trends, I should top 5,000 miles unless something takes me off the bike. Looks like I should get 200,000+ feet of climbing if I continue the same types of routes for the second half of the year.
But you never know. In 2021, it was early December and I was maybe 200 miles from cracking 5,000 when I got hit by a car. No more miles in 2021 and a few months into 2022 before I could really ride again, so only managed about 4,400 miles last year.
I don't need motivation to ride, so I don't like to focus too much on goals because then these can cause stress. Of course goals can also be a source of fun or satisfaction when achieved. But if I were getting near the end of the year, and I could see if I pushed a bit I'd crack a certain number of miles, like 5,000 or 6,000, then I'd probably look to push to reach that mark.
I do have sort of bucket list type goals. Certain rides I'd like to do sometime. But I don't approach these like these are something I must do.

I'm on pace for 5-6k miles, about what I expected.
My first goal was to train over the winter to be able to ride at x speed and x power - came pretty close.
Second goal was to hit some proper mountain rides - reached that goal.
Third goal, which may or may not happen this fall - head out west and climb Mt Lemmon/Onion Valley, Horseshoe Meadows...
OH, and:
300w FTP goal - FAILED.

this old man was a little ahead of a humble target of 2023 miles for the year in May, but now I am a little behind after an accident in early June. I'm getting back into running, and that will make it difficult to make up for those weeks of no riding.

I am behind- havent done as many gravel races as I hoped, havent ridden as many miles as I hoped, and am not riding as frequently as I hoped.

Ugh, I just had this realization today. At new year, my wife and kids and i all wrote down our resolutions and put it on the fridge. mine was to ride my bike just twice a week. realizing its July and i have done only a handful of rides all year is disappointing. But onto better things, half a year remaining and the weather is great!

I am leery of setting goals after a couple times when I did and then external events bollixed things up, so I tend to look at it retrospectively. At the moment, with 2757 miles (real and virtual), I'm still in hopes of making another 6000 mile year, but I don't want to jinx it!
I was hoping to do more climbing this year, but Rt.84 being closed ruined that - this weekend I was talking with some other local riders who said that with 84 closed, the two nice, quiet climbs up to Skyline are full of car traffic going both ways. I'm too old for that nonsense. So I'll stick with my usual 3100 feet/60 mile Sundays.

I'm in my first calendar year of being childless (mostly - youngest is home for the summer, but has a job, and a car), and predictably, I'm finally able to be pretty consistent with my riding schedule every week. I'm on track to have the biggest year I've had since I got back on my bike at the end of 2019, after a 15 year break from riding. As of today, I'm less than 300 miles away from passing my total for all of 2022. My vague goal is 5000 miles for this year, but my riding includes a significant amount of time on my MTB and gravel bike, which is always a much lower avg mph compared with my road bike.

5-7k miles seems like the sweet spot for a lot of us. i have mixed feelings about all the climbing, there are lots of climby routes without much traffic directly available, but my enthusiasm varies greatly day to day and by the quality of the descent. i've still never done any of the big climbs down by you, i guess this isn't the year to start

My only quantifiable goal is a weekly one: I want to ride more than 100 miles every week. I rarely fall short. That will put me around 5000 miles for the year, but I want to get consistent and regular exercise, so the weekly goal makes more sense to me.

I ride less than I used to because of the workload I have in the week and also because with a very swing wing changing weather whether too much heat or rain, I ride less than before.But I ride every week end on 30 miles to keep myself in shape

and the unseasonably cool/wet weather in socal this year, at less than 900 miles. now that it's warmed up, cautiously optimistic the new goal of 3,000
miles can be attained. only riding 2x a week at most now vs 3-5x a week in the past so really need to ramp up the mileage and average a 50-miler
every ride. the incidental, but helpful for semi-form and junk miles, "lunch rides" of 15-22 miles that were actually to/from lunch before work are largely a thing of the past.
those added up to roughly 100 miles every month. the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

Lost my road bike last year so right now I only have my Hybrid. There is no way I'm going to hit my goal of 3000 miles on the hybrid. Not even close.

I started out the year rehabbing and got cleared by late May to get back on the road. Got another Helix and have been taking it easy with 15-25 mile loops, about 2-3x a week since June. Slowly getting back to form while at the same time, enjoying the morning rides with my 16yr old son and 14yr old daughter until they decide to drop their old man because they know I'm not 100%. Damn kids. Lol.

Here in the Searing Desert, we had the nicest spring and early summer I can ever remember in 2023 - cool mornings, warm but entirely tolerable afternoons. Riding in 95° heat isn't bad at a 40° dew point. I was way up on mileage as compared to other years - not a record year, but definitely top-10. But the nice weather finally ended, we're back up to the usual 115°, and I just got back from a 16-day road trip where I didn't get any riding miles (too busy). I just need to re-establish my hard-earned fitness over the next few weeks to prepare for the 12 Hours of Sun City ride - an overnight ride where you have fun racking up miles on a quiet long loop and the sun isn't trying to kill you. Hoping to put in another 100+ miles on the Raleigh Pro or another fast bike on that ride. Then it's surviving on early morning rides until mid-September, when the weather (should) get tolerable again and get ready for the riding season to resume in earnest in mid-October thru early May.

Same as last year - 6000kms (3700mi) with more or less 65 000m (213 000ft) of total elevation and an average speed of 28km/h (17.4mph) or more. Goal is not total elevation, though, it's distance and average speed.

Goal for this year is 1500 miles - I'd love for it to be more, but work, kids, life, blah blah blah. That said, I'm currently on track to break 2k.
