I've been over 50 a couple times on downhill. I've been chasing 40 mph under power for the last 5 years or so. Every year I've inched closer. Last year I hit 39 twice on a regular ride I do with a group. It's a regular group ride with 4 or 5 sprint points and regrouping. It's a fairly fast group and an undulating road. I'm hoping to hit it this year.

I'm nearly 60 now, but in the 80s, they clocked our field going 59 mph down the backside of Brandon's Gap at the Killington Stage Race. I drafted a tractor trailer down a slight grade 51 mph in the late 90s. And I went 52 solo down our local Meriden Mountain about 15 years ago. I have not gone faster since. I think those daredevil days are gone sadly.

Here's my brand new custom designed tour bike with a SA XL-RD5w with 117 GI that day I think. Near 46 mph with about 12 mph tailwind. It was the maiden highway ride as well for the bike before I did all the CF addons, but the wheels had done 44.63 twice on a 1991 Raleigh frame that I had bought new.
VIDEO proof, skip to 50 secs, and at 2:47 I show the speedometer. The setup was a big mess then just to get it on the road and try it.

Have a subcategory to add: how fast have you ridden on the flats, not pedaling?
Yesterday a monster storm passed through northern California and an afternoon break in the rain got me out of the house to check out the river. When I got on the levee path the wind was directly at my back and I found myself flying along on the mountain bike, coasting. Glanced at the computer to see 22 mph.
Don't think that's happened before.
Rest of the ride was harrowing in parts, especially when unexpected side winds knocked me around like a paper cup. And so very many downed trees. Peak gusts in the storm hit 60 mph.
Yesterday a monster storm passed through northern California and an afternoon break in the rain got me out of the house to check out the river. When I got on the levee path the wind was directly at my back and I found myself flying along on the mountain bike, coasting. Glanced at the computer to see 22 mph.
