Why do bicycle tires/tubes lose air so quickly?

I think from other comments that the problem is the sprung lever on the head. On my pump it swings back aggressively once you start to detach it, and I know the same has happened to friends, too, so I'm not unique :-). Sounds like it's time to look for an alternative pump!

Off-topic, but I had a related problem when I got back 'into' bicycling a few years ago, after many years where my main exercise was walking, especially up mountains, etc. For a year I cycled 3 times a week, and eschewed walking. All was fine, and I felt really fit, until the annual visit to the Picos de Europa. A short 5-hour hike over a familiar path on the first day -- and the the next day cramps and stiffness were the worst I ever remembered. So it's not just upper-body that matters -- legs use a whole extra series of muscles for walking, for sure. So now I alternate...
