Our favorite bench, at the southern end of the Monterey Bay trail in Pacific Grove, California. The peanuts are for the local squirrels, they are very friendly and eat from your hand. The water is for us. This bench is a memorial to one of the 9/11 victims. There are always flowers and sometimes a letter from the family. I like what you've done with the Birdy! looks great .. is that a dual drive? .. are you using anything to take up chain slack when you fold the wheel under?

Chain slack is certainly an annoyance.. I have a Cyclopedia chain tensioner on it's way to me right now! I bought it about 10 days ago, so it should get here (hopefully) in the next couple of weeks.

Yes it's a SRAM Dual Drive with with an obnoxiously fun range of gear inches (24.5 - 132.4!) which should get me into and out of any situation relating to hills and flats with a big smile on my face. (I particularly love flying down a hill at 31mph in top gear! Such an adrenaline rush!)

Here's how I achieved this delightfully unnecessary gearing:

GEAR HUB: Sram Dual Drive II
CHAINRING: Vuelta 58 tooth
CASSETTE: Sram PG850 (11,12,14,16,18,21,26,32)




I would like to change out my cassette for a more evenly spaced set of cogs though, maybe even 9 speed if I do that.

The other thing which helps me speed along on my Birdy are the 20 inch wheels and drivetrain upgrades from stock:

FRONT RIM: Sun CR18, 20" x 22.2mm, 28 hole
REAR RIM: Sun CR18, 20" x 22.2mm, 32 hole
SPOKES: DT Swiss Champion 2, 14 gauge
FRONT HUB: F125, 124 grams, Enduro 6000 2RS sealed bearings
REAR HUB: Sram Dual Drive II
DERAILLUER: Sram X4, I swapped in an 11 gram KCNC jockey wheel
CHAIN: Sram PC850 with KMC MissingLink

Next on my list / yet to be purchased are the following items:
Alligator i-Link cables
brake levers (still deciding on brand/model)
seat post (either KCNC LightWing or maybe the carbon one that pops up on ebay frequently)
quill stem (still deciding on brand/model)
saddle (still deciding on brand/model... I already swapped out the stock Velo saddle for a WTB race saddle, but I want a lighter one)
bolts... swap as many out for titanium parts as possible
pedals (considering ditching my MKS caged pedals for Shimano SPD or Crank Bros EggBeaters)

When I got the Birdy, it was over 34 pounds. It's currently a hair under 27 pounds, and I know if can be much lighter. (One huge weight problem is my love of the hefty Dual Drive hub!)

Whoo, new packing method for Dolly the Llama! I test rode it in town this morning and I think it`s going to work great
Flying out Thursday for a real world mision.

The last method worked okay, but so much stuff in the rear bag made it droop into the tire if I didn`t keep an eagle eye on it.

Nice! I've wanted to tour with my Friday, but figured I'd need a trailer (it's a PR, not a Llama). Hmm Hmm Hmm!

Night ride in Yokohama recently.

The rear brakes had been grabbing due to a small blip on the rim. Repositioning the pads helped somewhat for a while but noticed the grabbing again on my commute today.

I think a 16" 305 replacement wheel won`t be easy to find - though I really love the bike, I`m debating whether or not I should start putting a lot of money into repairs and parts for a nearly 5 year old folder. Might be time for a new bike.

Not much out there that's going to be as light as your SL,at least not without dropping some coin. Def think it would be worth it to replace a rim.
