Cramp on right side of torso, right under ribcage?

Hey guys. I got into cycling last summer getting a pretty basic Fuji mountain bike, and riding it both around the roads for exercise and with a friend of mine in some state parks for fun. I didn't ride much this past school year, but now that the summer's here I'm getting back into it as fast as I can. To join my friend on the road, I got myself a nice new road bike (Fuji Roubaix ) and I love it! I've noticed something though that I wanted to ask you about.

I just recently got it, so it might just be needing to get my body used to it, but toward the end of my ride (I ususally go about 15 miles for exercise) I start getting a cramp right underneath my ribs on the right side of my body. I'm not sure what the name of that area is called.

Might this just be from riding in a new position (leaned forward instead of basically sitting up like on my mountain bike)? Or am I not doing something I should be?

it might be just your body doing something it's not used to. i get a similar cramp on the left side sometimes. if it persists, (if it still happens after two or three months), and happens every time, it might be a body position issue.

If it persists you might want to see a doctor

It's probably what is commonly refered to as a "stitch" in your side. Happens frequently to people beginning aerobic exercises. As you get into shape it should go away and be replaced with a nice endorphin rush for a while.

This is not medical advice. Before beginning a serious program of physical exercise you should consult a physician.

The location of the pains can be important if you still have your appendix!

This. I used to get these from time to time when I first started cycling years ago. Pay attention to your breathing! For me; I found if I controlled my breaths the stitch would subside fairly quickly. Being properly hydrated and well nourished helps as well.

If your discomfort persists when not exercising then I'd consult a physician.

I used to get that in High School while doing laps at soccer practice. Coach's advice of course was "Run it out". Felt like someone was poking me in the diaphram with a stick, but mine was on the left side.

I do still have it, but given the rarity and certain conditions for the pain I doubt it's appendicitis.

Thanks guys. It makes sense to be that, just wanted to make sure this wasn't a one off thing indicating I was doing something wrong.

It's your breathing. If you're getting a stitch in your side during aerobic activity you're taking quick shallow breaths using your chest. Breathe using your diaphragm. Breathe like a distance runner; slow and deep.

+1 I used to get this running in lacrosse practice in high school (oh so long ago ...sigh..). Easing my pace a bit and putting my hands on top of my head (difficult on a bike ) usually made it lessen.

Hi, I'm feeling this same pain now. Did you figure out what was happening?

Probably ODed on pickle juice.

Could bread and butter pickle juice double as a sports drink?

Op might also have died because they he or she ignored the pain and didn't go to a doctor to find out for certain.

Hope that doesn't happen to our newest member, tahra_schoots

That happens when one takes medical advice from strangers on the internets instead of a licensed doctor.

Because it's always better to DIY

So what does that have to do with Tahra’s question above your response? If she is having the same issue, it sure beats opening duplicate threads on the same topic.

Tara, you may want to find a bike fitter in your area. Many bike shops offer this service or can recommend one.

Seems pretty straight forward to me. The question is being asked of someone who started this thread nearly 11 years ago and who has not been active for nearly 10 years, all without quoting that person, making it even more unlikely that he will respond to the question being asked of him.

Good news, he's still alive, only too embarassed to share what his rib pain turned out to be. Over-training is never good.
