82 specialized stumpjumper (and others): serial coding for frame builder?
Hi - I just bought a nice shape 1982 lugged stumpjumper for $45!
The guy pulled it out of a dumpster-my kind of recycling, and a justified profit even for a cheapskate like me! Missing front wheel, seat & post, and rear wheel sort of tacoed. Front mech is bent. Else in great shape, not too used. It's got the the tomasellis, the mafacs, the TA crank, the 'pillow block' stem, etc... Silver, and the 23" frame! This is my favorite of all the SJ versions (though I really like my 85 sport too!).
So now hunting down the parts from the usual sources (the seatpost -- it's a 26.0, right? Found a decent laprade on eb for $16 shipped; on the way! Suzue Hubs - on the way! Araya 7X Rims - ouch - watching...
Anyway, serial is M2K50511 ... which I managed to decode to November 1982 (derailleur codes both YC, btw), but for the life of me I can't find reference to who made the frames for these other than Toyo for those that start with T (I've also got the earlier 1982 tigged, Toyo, version; that was easier to decode...). Now I'm also wondering the makers of my 84 and 85 sport; alas in storage thousands of miles away in the UP ... hmm, do I have the serials written down somewhere...!
So who can point to (or make) the Rosetta Stone for these?

The crank set and the MAFAC cantis are worth far more than you paid. Great find.

I seem to be in the only area of the USA where I can't find a 20" +/- Stumpjumper for bupkis!

That's a nice bike!
I have an 85 Specialized Stumpjumper and an 81 Specialized Sequoia with serial numbers staring with 'M'.
From what I read from here and elsewhere, the 'M' stands for bikes made by Miyata for Specialized.
Some however also say the 'M' stands for Miki Seisakusho for the earlier models.

anybody got some 7x rims or wheels to sell?. Also bottom bracket -136mm 3RR!
Hmmm - let me know about those wheels... Or anybody else's got a pair of 7X rims/wheels for sale...
Also, I disassembled the bike with great pleasure o'er the weekend, and found the BB may be slightly bent - it's a 3RR! (136mm)... Must be the combo of wide chainstays and TA crank! Anybody else encounter this conundrum on old SJs with TA cranks? How solved?
Anyway, too cheap to buy a $175 Phil Wood (shipping to AK), I found these Kajita BBs for sale here:

and ordered one - they've got 2 more, apparently, and I hope this isn't actually another abandoned website selling old parts that were available 10 years ago...

A few almost restored 1982 stumpjumper pix.
I thought I'd follow-up my original post now that the restoration is about done. (or almost, see for info)

See now some pictures that I really shouldn't show since not yet fully polished, but geez I took all the time, so why not:

Nice stumpy...I also have a similar 82 and have always wondered how many of those were built with the TA cranks ...ect..excluding the first 400-500 tig welded version
