New Frame Day - Mercian
The new Mercian King of Mercia I've had on order showed up last night. Yay.
Is it still C&V if it's new?? It's made from Reynolds 725 OS, touring geometry. Black pearl paint. Workmanship is excellent. The plan is to use this for both sport riding and some light touring/camping (weekenders etc). Being that the geometry is nearly exactly like the PX10 I've been riding recently, that should work out well. I'll probably do two sets of wheels. One 36H for touring, and another lighter set for going more faster.
I had to do a quick mock up. Crank is Sugino Mighty Tour. Brakes are Gran Compe 610. BB will be Phil Wood and HS is Chris King. I have a Brooks Swift saddle. I've not made up my mind yet on the rest, except white tape, for now. I'm not trying to go full on retro, but I am trying to be semi tasteful. Suggestions are welcome.

Love it. Looks like they might be mixing that black pearl paint the same as they did in '84.
Def a classic look with that paint and the gold decals, fill, and lug lining.
Tasteful beginnings, and a stunning frame.
I'm going a little more flash with my next project, but I tend to think there's a strong possibility that a new frame from Mercian is in the cards somewhere down the line for me. I like the direction you've taken, that's for sure!

Dang, that's a class act. Get that thing built up and out in the SoCal summer evening sunlight where you can take some decent pics.
My size, too. Next time I'm in LA I'm going to come by your place and have you tour-guide me around your favorite riding places, okay? You can let me ride the Masi, this or the PX, I ain't particular

I like the white panel on the seat tube and the lined lugs look great.
What is the plan for shifting and how many speeds?

Absolutely beautiful, it should be fantastic when it is built to your liking. Don't keep us in the dark as you build this one up, please, lots of reports and pics would be a nice treat.

Missed out on a King of Mercia touring bike with the correct frame size at an unbelievable price recently. Still crying over it. If the guy who bought it reads this .. you are one lucky b@$&%#%!!! Mercian will even repaint and rebuild their old bikes for you if you can get them to their shop in Derby England.

Beautiful frame and I like your color and decal choices. That should make a great riding bike. If I ever order a custom frame, Mercian will be on my short list. I bought a Bob Jackson World Tour "off the peg" about six years ago and it's been a great bike, but I get the impression that Mercians are a little nicer quality. How long did it take to get your Mercian after ordering it?

What are you thinking for the drivetrain? I remember you mentioned DT shifters a while back (DA 10 speed?).
My Mercian frameset is coming in about a month. Looking forward to how this one builds up

Thanks for all the kind comments folks. It's nice to share the enjoyment.
I went through all sorts of crazy paint schemes on the way too addictive Mercian frame builder app on their website. I did seriously consider schemes with metallic purple and lime green flamboyant based, but ultimately went for a color a banker would pick... The black pearl isn't really metallic black, but more of a very dark anthracite when the light hits it. I wanted a slightly flashier version of the Hercules 3spd I had when I was 11.
The shifters and derailleurs are not determined yet, but tentatively considering Dura Ace 10sp DT shifters and either Shimano or Microshift derailleurs. I have not ruled out campy Athena or something, as long as they are silver. I'd need to go with friction shift, which I am ok with. Seems to work on the Bianchi L'Eroica.
Tarwheel: build time was about 8 months. They had actually told me 10 months when I placed the order, so I'm caught a bit off guard WRT parts for the build. Not that I'm complaining.
Since I posted last night I noticed a new feature. Heart shaped cutout on the BB shell. Pretty cool. I was expecting a plain shell with a tapped hole for a plastic guide, this is much classier. I guess it's just a off the shelf cast shell, but still I like it.

Do the 10 speed Dura Ace downtube shifters even have a friction setting for the RD shifter? I thought I had read somewhere that it is index-only.
Edit: Nevermind, must've been thinking of something else...

Yea, that is sweeeeeeetness!!! I can't wait to see it built up and on the road.
What part of LA do you live and normally ride Sal? I grew up in SoCal, in Torrance/Redondo area. Also lived in the Conejo Valley where there is some of the best cycling ever.
Man, I can't wait to see the Mercian! Makes me think I should just splurge and get a KoM over the Bob Jackson and Holdsworth.

Very sweet; I'm looking forward to the build threads. This may get me motivated to build up my 1979 Trek 510 which is also a touring/sports touring model.
