It's worth noting that all bikes, including those with multi-speed freewheels, were "1x" before the invention of the front derailleur, and even that took some persuasion before it caught on. We didn't start with a "sensible" triple and then deviate from it.

I think that became 1X x 2X when they starting using the hub with a cog on both sides, correct? That was some wide spaced gearing options.

That, and genuine multi-speed freewheels. People keep forgetting that there was a whole world outside of the Tour de France and whatever Campagnolo made.

Not to stray too far from the thread subject,(whatever the subject is) but I believe if not for the costly Delrin mistake, Simplex would still exist today alongside Stronglight and Mavic. Maybe, just maybe, even ahead of Campy. Their high end stuff was really good. Shifted/worked a lot better than Campy. Of course, you could say that about most any brand of deralleur BITD.

I already mentioned Rivendell. Surly also sells triples, with the Trucker and the Troll. Specialized has the Allez Triple and Trek sells the 520. Several aftermarket manufacturers sell nice cranksets, and sourcing a triple for a custom build has not been a problem for me. The triple crankset is alive and well.

Okay, got it. But, just to be clear, cereal flying in your face is not a good thing when cycling. (Unless, of course, you're a mountain biker and the cereal is Smurf Magic Berries.)

Well, unfortunately, I haven't experienced what it's like to have cereal fly in my face because I haven't owned a mountain bike with a triple crankset since 1995. That was the year I "downgraded" to a double crankset on a road bike, and it was all downhill from there

In the early days of cycling all bikes were fixed gear and single speed and people still managed to race, train, ride for recreation and fun, tour the world, bike pack, gravel ride, commute to their jobs....derailleurs complicated everything caused wars on internet forums and made everybody weaker....

With a double, you set two limit screws, make sure the cable isn't too loose, and all you need to do to shift is slam the lever from one extreme to the other. Sure, you could do the same with a triple, as long as you never want to use the middle ring.

I suppose it's interesting how other people see the world in front of them. For you it seems to be all about fashion. I'm more into function. Over the years I've had bikes with 3x, 2x and 1x gearing and have experienced the pros and cons of them all. I don't think any of them are actually led by "fashion". I think it's more of an evolutionary process.

You've lost me here on your fashion argument ???
Yes they all perform the function of gearing, but in slightly different ways. They are not all the same, at least not in my personal experience of all 3 options. There's a good reason why some forms of cycling favour one option over the others and it has nothing to do with fashion.
