Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need Advice: Used 2008 Cannondale Six13 6 vs. 2013 Specialized Allez Compact

I've narrowed my bike-buying options down to two. Here they are:

1) A used 2008 Cannondale Six13 6 - Tiagra. This bike was a rental for a local shop and they're selling it now. It's mostly stock - they're throwing in a used pair of SPD pedals. It rides well and has been maintained exclusively by the shop. Owner says she doesn't rent it more than 5 times a year. Cost: $885.

2) A new 2013 Specialized Allez Compact - Sora. One of the attractive things about this bike is the shop has a 2-year free maintenance deal. The shop itself is just down the street from where I live, while the other shop is a significant distance away (I don't own a car). Cost: $670.

Which seems like the better deal?

Have you test ridden both ?
The Six13 is a nice riding bike. No experience with the other.

Having just spent a week riding a well-maintained rental bike (circa mid-00s), my advice would be to buy new, as you know what you are getting. Also, why not haggle for a Tiagra groupset on the Specialized - the increased price that results would still have you in the cost ballpark of the more expensive, older Cannondale.

cheers

2008 Tiara would be equal to the Sora of 2013.
Go for the Allez.
I'm a proud owner of 2 Allez, both of which I got used.
I like the geometry, & feel/response i get on mine.

My next purchase will be a new Evo or CAAD10 Black Di2.
I really want a bike with a straight/horizontal top tube

Always buy new when given the opportunity. Try to avoid used carbon. Two years free maintenance plus a warranty is well worth it.

Another vote for new. The Allez has always been a great handling bike - new Sora would be a good move over 5-6yr old Tiagra.
