I like early morning riding between 4 to 6 AM. I think the drunks and crazies are mostly off the road by that time (since the bars here close at 2:00 AM), and the ones driving at those hours are pretty responsible people. I think of them as the ones entrusted to get the world started for the rest of us. Also the overnight shift changes usually occur at 7:00 AM, so those possibly sleep-impaired commuters are also off the road.

Most of the drunks don't come out till around 11p to about 2a which I'm never on my bike during those hours anyways. I don't ride past 10p, and most of time not past 8pm due to my schedule of needing to get home, wind down from riding for 2 hours or so, then go to bed by midnight to 1am.

We've both been fortunate so far. We each mind our own business, and they don't seem to mind when I shine the light on them to see where they're going. I smelled the lingering smell of their spray on the way in today, and was glad I'm not the one they were aiming at last night.

night riding is alot safer and enjoyable. for this reason less traffic. I have a 3-11pm shift 2 days a week and a 8-3 shift 2 days also. They are so different. I enjoy riding at night and feel a lot safer. I'm only worried about if I'm bright enough for behind. I may upgrade to a second superflash and also throw some refective tape on my helmet and parts of my bike.

my town has barely any people in it and tons of street lights so I like doing night rides when its nice and quiet.
