I crawl under many houses in my job. Yes, it sucks. I've seen tons of those, and if they don't wiggle, I move on, never wondered what they were. In the south, few basements, many crawlspaces. Snakes lots. Once in a great while, you ask the homeowner if they lost a pet, after finding a dog or cat skeleton.

They have extremely powerful venom, but their fangs are too short to pierce skin.

An elderly woman living across the street from us received a spider bite which made her arm swell up, and it was diagnosed as from a brown recluse. We've known of other such reports too. Of course the diagnoses could have been wrong but if they werre correct then there are brown recluses living in the northeast too.

But then, I read those websites on the Internet so they must be true.

Yeah. Apparently there are thousands of species that are referred to as "Daddy Longlegs", some of which are not even arachnids.
Of course, one has to take what one reads on the Net with a huge grain of salt. I don't believe half of it. And discount the rest.
But one can find no evidence, that I was able to find anyway, that these long-legged creatures are highly venomous.
I believe in this version:

I used to take a "spidey stick" with me so I could knock down webbing so I could continue crawling through the joist chases. Some homes were pretty gnarly.

Again, these are not daddy longlegs spiders. These are shaped differently and love to hang out in houses. Their legs are long and look similar but are not the commonly referred to daddy longlegs.

ETA: They are technically Cellar Spiders which are technically a true/actual daddy longlegs whereas the commonly recognized "daddy" is not a spider at all.

I kind of like spiders. Been known to catch and release them outdoors. But I do find the ones with glossy, shiny legs a bit spooky.
When I lived out west, we seldom saw spiders indoors. Here in the east, good grief. All kinds of spiders.

When we lived in the Phoenix area (my younger daze) I would catch a black widow to put in a jar and fed it crickets.

Could the spider be observing your bicycle project activity and communicating your n+1 status with extraterrestrials? Ancient Alien theorists say, Yes!

No. I really had no clue. I didn't even know who to ask. Now I know. It's the terrifying Shimano Fungus.

Let's hope that sucker never develops the taste for human brains!

I've heard the largest living organism on earth is an underground fungus.

When I moved to Arkansas from the desert, I packed my bike in a shipping box with instructions to ship it out. Apparently, while it waited to go, a black widow spider made herself a home in the box. When I opened it up, there she was in her web between the spokes of my front wheel.

Sadly, she died soon after.

See, this is a bicycle thread. And the bike was a 1988 Specialized Hard Rock, so it's even vintage.
