Walkway Across the Hudson State Historic Park, a 1-1/4 mile former railroad bridge now part of the Empire State Trail near Poughkeepsie.

Brooklyn Bridge. The last of the New York bridges for me, at least for a while. This new bike path is not nearly as scenic as the walking path, which used to be a combined use path. But the new one is at least free of walkers walking in the bike lane and bikers screaming at walkers to get out of the bike lane.




Here’s the better view from the walking lanes. You can see how it could be problematic to squeeze bikers and walkers onto the same path.

Bridges over nameless creeks in White County, Indiana

On the way home from running an errand, I passed through a little park along the Rock Island trail.. which is a MUP built on the old Rock Island Line rail bed. The park is adjacent to the trail, situated between Dunlap and Alta, and something of a hidden gem. In particular, it's quite nice for cross country skiing!

The sign at the entrance that is accessible by road:



and the info sign at that parking lot (which is only big enough for a half dozen cars):



There is a small creek that runs through the park, with an appropriately small bridge...



Just north of the park, the trail runs under a railroad bridge, so more of a "bikes under bridges" photo...
I've never been on the trail when a train came by, fortunately.


Another short distance north is where the trail crosses over the Kickapoo creek.
In the winter, when skiing on the trail, you can look down on the frozen and snowy creek and see all of the tracks of the various critters that travel along the creek.

This is my 1992 Stumpjumper drop bar conversion on the Wakonsa bridge over the Des Moines river. It's hard to read the sign in the picture. The bridge was part of the light railway system in the city until 1949. It was turned into a MUP in 1999. I pick up the bridge around 2 miles from my home (there is a MUP that I pick up less than a mile from my home to get there). Once I cross the bridge, I can head south to downtown or points north which connects with some of the best riding in the area. Central Iowa has an extensive system of linked trails.

The back spans are 125 years old, while the front span is barely a decade old. Here's what it looked like in 2008:



And after the flood receded:



The collapsed span was replaced with a similar-looking span built out of modern welded steel (no rivets on the new section).

A neat piece of history!

Took a 160 mile ride from Minneapolis to Duluth MN yesterday on my 1975 Raleigh International. Longest ride I’ve ever done in a single day and I was exhausted last night when I rode in at 9:15PM but I woke up in my hotel today, stripped the heavy as a brick bag off the bike and went for a ride down by the water front. Here’s a couple of pics on the Lift bridge over the Harbor.

Can't resist a good bridge pic - here's the Colnago Master I built up while getting my MA degree in Germany (2017/18). That's the old bridge in Heidelberg.

I love that bridge! It's quite distinct, as it was a hanging transporter bridge before being converted to a lift bridge (which is why it has so much redundant structure at the top). Wikipedia thinks it's the only bridge like that on Earth. Whether or not that's true, it's a neat piece of history.
