Trying to decide between the following candidates for my next STI type build: 98' Aluminum GT Attack, '81 LeTour Frame (new old stock) and '85 Voyageur.(new old stock) for a $500 groupset budget (I have wheels, tires, bars, etc), which would you build and what would you build it with?
It looks like we ride the same size frames, I'm super jealous you found a GT triple triangle in your size

[QUOTE=abshipp;22230286]Yours looks like it's in such good shape! I really liked the build I did with my frame but I had to use most of the parts from it for a new non-C&V bike. I've got a new build in mind for it though
Riddle of Steel told me the Voyageurs were clear coated and that tends to yellow and get brittle and that It is relatively easy to remove with a paint stripper. that is what I did and then I just used Quick-Glo Chrome Polish (as seen on Jay Lenos Garage). I like these all chrome Schwinn's so much, I have two now - one more of a original build and this one with the modern components. The original Super Maxy crank and Altus groupset are really nice and smooth. I almost like riding the original set up better than the new but it just doesn't have the range for hills like the triple Tiagra does and I am not getting any younger
The GT fell in my lap recently - it was an original survivor but the seller stripped it which is kind of a shame but I was happy to get the frame and some other pieces. I thought it was steel and didn't even realize it was aluminum till I got it home (my only aluminum frame) My research shows it was likely built at the tail end of the company before they went big box and joined up with Chinese Schwinn. I am a sucker for really nice original paint and this one is that! For the GT - I ended up buying a used SRAM 50/34 crankset on ebay and some Microshift brifters along with the 105 derailers that came with it.. Total budget on the GT is around $350 including buying the frame. along with parts on hand to complete it It may replace my carbon bike in my line up if it rides as well as I think its going to look. I really prefer the 50/34 versatility compared to the 52/40 or 53/39 the majority of my old Schwinn's ran. my touring bikes have triples which are ok too, but I really like the 50/34 - 10 speed set up of modern bikes.
Updating old frames is my favorite way to enjoy these classic bikes. I have way too many right now! about two years ago, I set out to complete my 80's Schwinn bike shop line up and got a little carried away (just can't say no to nice old paint or Chrome in the $50-300 price range) and like any collecting hobby, once I had a LeTour, I needed a Tempo then a Premis, then I needed a Peloton, etc.
My current keepers include the 2 Chrome Voyaguers, a really nice '88 Voyageur (original), very nice '87 Tempo (going 1x10 on this one), '85 Peloton (too nice to update), the '85 Voyageur Frame, the '81 LeTour (Gravel build), '87 Trek 520 (too nice to update). Been planning to put some of the rest on the for sale section, just haven't gotten around to it yet. These include a very nice '88 Premis, '87 Super Sport, '85 LeTour Luxe, '78 LeTour III, '90 Bianchi Axis, '88 LeTour, '87 Traveller '87 Voyageur Frame, etc all in the 25" Frames. all of these are really nice paint frames except the '87 voyageur frame
The only models I lack in my upper end Schwinn line up is a Circuit, Prologue and Paramount. the Paramount is the one I will go for next when the right one comes along. One Day I will prob have to let a lot of these go, but for now - I like riding them, wrenching on them and even just looking at them. The colors of the '80's Schwinn just can't be beat in my opinion. My ultimate goal is to build my absolute favorite frame with a totally modern, new parts build. Just not sure which is my favorite yet

[QUOTE=abshipp;22236163]I . Next build for that frame is likely going to be a fixed gear, fendered, porteur bar commuter.
The chrome single speed will be cool!
I am going to build the '84 Voyageur as an all a rounder many in this suggested. My goal for this bike is to have it function and look like a new bike but still retain the cool 80's Schwinn Vibe. Even though Its a touring model, I would most likely only carry enough gear on it to stay overnight a couple nights at a time and I don't plan to ride in the mountains or anything like that. The build plan is as follows:
'1984 Schwinn Voyageur Frame and Fork (new old stock scored on Ebay last year)
'700C black wheelset with older Shimano 105 Silver Alloy Hubs.
'700x38 Pasela Skinwalls (had planned to use these on a trek 520 but decided the 27" original equipment wheels were two nice to change out)
'Ultegra 10 Spd Medium Cage Derailleur
'Praxisworks Alba M30 50/34 Crankset with a Box Two BSA Bottom Bracket
'SRAM 11-32 10 Speed Cassette (I currently ride a 50/34 with a 11-27 and thats enough for the hills I am willing to tackle so the 32 is just a little extra in case I do encounter a bigger hill under load)
'Dura Ace 10 Spd Bar Ends
'Cane Creek SCR-5 Brake Levers
'Newer Style Specialized Power Seat that is on there now, but may get changed out for a Brooks
'Undecided on Front/Rear Racks - i have some vintage silver Blackburns but may opt for something newer style
'Undecided on Brake/Shift Housing color - most likely white
'Undecided on Bar Tape Color, most likely Black or maybe Brown if I go with a brown Seat
" I have the Shimano Cable Stops and they will have to be filed for this project to fit as another Voyageur enthusiast pointed out
Does anyone see any conflicts with this plan? thanks all!

ok, so I finished up the '98 GT Attack - I know, I know its not steel, and maybe not technically C&V, and was prob even a STI bike from the factory, but I am going to show it anyway
6061 Triple Triangle in near perfect original Red paint
Richey Carbon seat post with an original carbon fork
specialized power saddle
mismatched wheelset Easton/Oval
50/34 SRAM powerglide crankset
original 105 9 spd rear derailer (shifts 10 spd)
micronew shifters/brake levers 2x10
continental 700x25 with a Red stripe
she's fast, pretty lightweight. I really like her. Going to ride this one a lot I think
next up - the Voyageur All Around Build

I'm pretty sure this is here already but also pretty sure its been quite awhile.
This is such a fantastic rider, you would think it was built for modern drivetrain.

I haven't decided yet but Im leaning towards trying to piece together the 1992 Campagnolo Record Groupset with the ergopower levers for my Paramount frame I recently purchased. I think the frame is from 1991. https://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2...ge+Catalog.pdf
Id like to get some of the really modern levers to try on another bike, mainly because the large hoods/grips they have look like they may be comfortable. I don't know if any of these things are compatible with old derailleurs. I guess I could just hook up the brakes.

I did this one a few years ago, but never posted it here. I found a set of Shimano 105 STI levers at an antique mall for $5, but before I could decide which bike to put them on, my son asked me if I could mount them on his bike. He had taken a nasty spill when he drifted off the edge of the pavement while reaching down to shift, so he was apprehensive about taking his hands off the bars.
This bike could be a candidate for a Clunker Challenge, long term edition. Get a bike on the road for $100 and keep it for ten years, while putting at least 1000 miles on it. I got it around 2005 for $20. It was rough from sitting outside, but once I freed the seat post, it only needed new tires, bar wrap, and seat to be ridable. Even with the $20 pair of 8 speed wheels to go with the STI, I still don't have $100 in this bike, and it has accumulated a bunch of miles, both by me and by my son after I passed it on.
