Masi frame detail question

Quick question for you Masi experts - when did Masi begin using braze on cable guides for the rear brakes on the top tubes? Anyone know?

I don't know the answer, but I'm curious to hear opinions. My 1974 Masi has top tube cable guides, but it has been repainted and has several braze-ons that it shouldn't, so I don't think it's a reliable data point. I think someone mentioned recently that the California shop sometimes made semi-custom builds with irregularities like this. I have no idea when they became the default.

Are you wondering about the Italian Masis or US?

The registry at Bob Hovey's site (Masi Registry USA) lists quite a few bikes with top tube guides in 1974 and 1975.

Had a 76 Gran Criterium no braze-ons. Neither top tube or shifters.

My general impression from long ago ('70s) is that Italian frames had more of a reputation for simplicity and graceful lines - simple lugs, 3 Campy cable clips, fewer braze-ons, whereas British custom frames were done up fancier, and adorned with all the bits one preferred, often lots of them. Maybe Italian customers started feeling left out?

The U.S. models are the ones I was inquiring about.

If you look at the catalogs on Bob Hovey's site: Masi Catalogs, it looks like they appeared in '77.

I have a similar era bike with top tube guides and shifter mounts. It is repainted and I always assumed they were added around the time of the repaint, but I cannot really know.

the '77 year brought guides - thin section of tube cut on a diagonal - they rusted out often- hard to get paint in the bore.

some Carlsbad bikes received guides- no standard way. I have seen "divers bell" chainstay stops on one from original, a few repaints received the "Confente" ( and later Medici ) guides- pretty sure added at repaint.
the Carlsbad shop did do refinish work.

as Masi did not continue to use the Confente style, this really points that they were Mario's concept and he was planning his next step.
( need to be careful, Medici had them too and would add them on bikes they refinished, it's messy I tell you )

in the San Marcos era the guides were by Silva with a mid transverse slot, and of heavier wall, better durability. These continued into the 80's and were also done on the Italian contract made "American" GC's with the Henry James sourced lugs and crown.

so, a Carlsbad bike with guides would be really rare. If Silva type done later as they did not exist yet.

downtube shifter bosses. A special order thing, not officially on the menu. I ordered a Fall '76 GC with them. A $15. Upcharge.
if one knew to ask you could also get 32 spoke wheels.

Didn't want to jump in since, one, I didn't know the answer, and two, there are some real Masi experts on here. I would note that the Breaking Away MASIs had brazed guides and were probably made in 77 for the 78 filming. I think someone mentioned their 76 had clips.
