The PO bought this bike used in Dec 1985. He gave me the invoice from Racer Sportif in TO - that's Toronto, Ontario, affectionately known as the centre of the universe in Canada - which is the shop he bought it from (the stick-on chain stay protector from Racer Sportif is still on the bike). Rides very nicely. Tall seat tube at 59 cm c-c while top tube is 55 cm c-c. I still want to sort out the wheels and hubs for something more period appropriate.

I haven't had much luck with finding much in the way of the Cougar manufacturing story. Tried the current Terry Dolan bike company (denied having any access to company history) and Terry Dolan himself via Twitter but nothing forthcoming from him either.

Seems like this should be the proper forum to show off my Bob Jackson End to End. It rides like a dream and is equipped with Campag Veloce mechs,Centaur hubs (proper Record quality cup and cone pre 2007 hubs ) Centaur U.T 53/39 cranks, Campag Record 10 sp bar end shifters, Tectro brake levers and Miche Performance caliper brakes. The hubs are laced to a pair of Ambrosio Excellight rims with DT Competition spokes. Tyres are foldable 28X622 Panaracer Tour Guard . Saddle is a Brooks Professional which I have used hard for 8 years, and it still looks new, but comfort has improved a lot !

The pump is a Zéfal HPX Classic. The handlebar tape is home made faux leather; i.e a snotty green synthetic cork wrap treated with amber shellac, which (i.m.o) gives it a leatherlike touch of class and enhances its durability. When it eventually starts to look tacky you can just wipe it down with alcohol , let it dry, gently sand it and give it a fresh coat of shellac.

As a big fan of '80s Schwinn bikes, and quite importantly, their "THAT'S SO '80'S" paint schemes later in the decade, here is one from my stable. 1989 Schwinn Tempo, originally with full Shimano 105 7-speed SIS and Biopace rings (now on my Peleton), she became a 9-speed bike, then a no-speed frameset with an unknown future (the anguish!) before returning to glory as an early 7400 Dura-Ace 7-speed SIS-equipped steed. 105 FD and headset (original and most likely fused ) remain and function flawlessly. Ritchey bars, Specialized Riva Road saddle, non-original Weinmann DP-18 rims (to DA hubs), 9-speed chain. All gears, either ring, are accessible. There are some really cool details I found about about this groupset as I went through it all. And goodness does it shift well!

Ok ok, I can't resist posting my '85 Ross Signature Series! 294S, top of the 29X trio. Campagnolo Triomphe groupset. 6-speed friction shift, Ishiwata 024 DB tubing. Surprisingly, just a little over 23 lbs with pedals, and you feel that lightness. My two Schwinns are half to one pound heavier. Ride quality and sheer smoothness are what it's all about. All about clipping along efficiently in your selected gear. I leave the race track-like Seattle commute to the indexed shifting bikes. Now that the weather is better, it's time to get her on the road more!

I just got done restoring the frame.
It's set up as a sport tourer with wide-range gearing, 27x1-1/4 wheels, and randonneur bars-- the way International's should have been in the first place!
Parts are a British-Italian mix. The saddle is from my first International that I had from 1977-82.

GB 88 brakes. You don't see these every day, they work about as well as any other vintage CP.


The finish is a 2-part Dupont automotive paint, a metallic base with a copper-tinted clear sprayed over. At first it looked really light, but with each successive coat it got darker until I figured it was "just right".

Always admired this brand, and when this one showed up I was shocked to see not many bids, and relieved to see I was the winner.

It represents many firsts for me: first steel, first campy, first Italian, first pink bike.

I was planning on buying a frame to build my own and have looked for quite some time, but they were always too rough, in a strange local, the wrong size, of questionable provenance, etc.

Finally the stars aligned and this one showed up already built to a decent specification and in my size.

It is an odd mix of campy: record crank and hubs, centaur hoods, mirage and chorus deraileurs, veloce brakes. I doubt I would have assembled it so, but man does it all work. Seller said the frame was a custom job that hung for years until he had it built. I don't know why it was pieced like this but it seems to be done in an oddly deliberate way. I absolutely love the color combo.

The frame is such an odd color that it is hard to describe. It changes depending on the light, varying from a weird sunset red to an almost flamingo pink.



Been raining since it arrived, but I did get a quick spin in yesterday and it rides like a dream. Much lighter than I expected and it just oozes a continuous springy alive feel.

The tubs will have to go, but everything else can stay and I can't wait to show up on my weekly group ride...hope the rain stops by then.
