The $5 Schwinn lives again

I haven't posted in here in a while, but I just finished a new commuter bike so I thought I'd share some pictures. I went to look at a Schwinn World Sport that was advertised on CL for $75. When I got there, he had two; a fairly nice one and this jewel, which he ended up throwing in for $5 extra.

I wanted to practice some brass brazing and add some rack braze-ons, so I thought I'd try this frame first since I couldn't make it much worse! After the brazing turned out OK, I took it in to a powder coater friend of mine who was able to clean it up and turn it bright yellow.

I added a mishmash of parts from my stash -- 9 speed bar end shifters and Ultegra derailleurs, cranks from the other World Sport, a generator hub wheelset with an AXO light (it'll charge your cell phone, woo!), Velo Orange stainless fenders and leather saddle, and a rack. Oh, and the world's sexiest 3TTT stem and bars. I'm looking forward to taking it to work tomorrow.

Excellent results, a great job saving and resto-modding the Schwinn. That is an awfully sweet stem. Now I need to find one in 100mm.

That's a fine looking bike. You'll have to add a ride report once you start to use it to go to work.

Congratulations- you've made yourself a really sweet bike!

I will also echo the "sexy stem" sentiment!

What stuff did you braze onto the frame? I'm curious because I've always wanted to try this myself...

Dang, your drops are a foot lower than your saddle. I can't do that.

He mentioned rack braze ons.

That would be a cool skill to acquire!

I ride most of my bikes with similar drop; I don't mind them a bit higher, but I don't enjoy riding with my bars level with the saddle. Too much difference to the race bike.

Rack bosses and another set of bottle bosses. A few pics, prior to clean up:
