Trying to smooth the edge requires going in at an oblique angle to the hole. You can't just run the file parallel to the bore. Thanks for your critique. I'm not perfect. The file might have slipped. How do you think it happened?

I've ridden tubes with Presta valves in a Schrader drilled rim on occasion. I don't think it's a big problem. But you people can argue about anything so have at it.

This is definitely true. Actually I went to the LBS and asked for those Presta Valve "savers" so I could make the hole smaller. He asked me, "Why don't you just stick with Schrader valves?". Suggested strapping tape to guard the valve stems. I didn't want to bring up this monkey house of a forum. But I think I'm going to try that first. The rear stem isn't quite as bad but it is definitely cutting into the stem too. Probably tape alone will do the trick. I think the files were probably overkill. And I agree...may run the rest of enraging the hole or making it oval.

If you cleaned up the hole with a file and/or sandpaper, you should be good to go with schraeder valves. Note that if it’s a particularly narrow rim, the wider valve can get in the way of the tire bead seating properly.

Hadn't thought of that. Fortunately this is a hybrid bike with wide rims. But I see how that could happen.
