Does anyone still use BioPace ?

I use a 28/38/48 on my PK-7 mountain bike. They came on my KHS, but I could not find the rings I wanted (22/32 inner and middle, the 38 would have been fine on the outside) for converting the KHS to a touring bike.
I like them, but need a lower gear range for touring.

Came stock on my '87 Stumpjumper Comp. (28-38-48). Liked them so much I bought a set for one of my commuters--'84 Trek 850. Seems like I can mash easier with them.

I wanted a smaller big chainring, but the design of my frame prevented me from lowering my front derailer at all.
I went from a 52t big ring to a 50t Biopace big ring, and carried over BioPaceII rings to the middle (38t) and granny (26t) positions.
I used this bike for practically all of my racing since late 1996, and am very pleased with the BioPace, which I feel allows an easier re-mount on difficult terrain as the cranks can get moving easier initially (i.e. the mid-stroke of the pedal moves a little further for a given road speed).
I use the rounder BioPace-II rings, which have only a 3.5% variation in gear ratio as opposed to the original BioPace with fully 8% variation.
The later BioPace-HP and BioPace-SG rings also were rounder at only 3.5%.
All BioPace big rings are only 3.5% variation to keep the front derailer in better control of the chain when shifting onto the big ring, and to allow a faster spin at the top end of the highest gear.
The rounder BioPace rings are very close in feel to round rings, and can be spun up to a high cadence. I like sprinting on these.
The bike in question is here, used for CX, XC, crits, hillclimb time-trials and quite a few centuries.
I've built 4 different sets of wheels/tires for it. The weird front derailer mounting is obvious.

It is nice to see that it wasn't only Sheldon and myself who thought Biopace was a good idea...

I like 'em, but another thing about BioPace is the size of the smallest sprocket that will fit on a 110mm, 74mm or 130mm bolt pattern.
Original BioPace rings were limited to a smallest size of 28t, 38t and 42t for the 74, 110 and 130mm bcd's, respectively.
The newer BioPace-II, -HP and -SG allowed a smallest size of 26t, 36t and 40t, respctively, and so were then immediately offered by Shimano.
Round rings allow a smallest size of 24t, 34t and 38t, respectively, for Shimano's primary three 1980's bolt patterns.

I could see why someone would change it to what you have there.
The original small ring that went with your big ring would have been 42t, and less round than your big ring, so perhaps that's why it was replaced with a round one.
Downshifting to a less-round ring can be very annoying at the higher cadences of fast riding, but upshifting to the rounder (only 3.5% variation) BioPace big ring might actually make the upshift from your round small ring seem easier.
