I didn't fight the law ...but the law won anyway!

I've been banned from riding circuits at my local college. I was stopped by the Director of campus security and told not to ride circuits any more. The chap was very nice about it and spoke about safety , ill-lit darkly clothed not paying attention at all students and cars reversing without looking - all of which is true, remarked on how well illuminated I was and that he often saw me cycling fast (thank you!) but safely, and sorry but that is that. In fairness I did crash there last year and break my leg in three places, so perhaps he has a point :-)

Frankly, you look kind of creepy and if students/staff saw you lurking around campus they may have felt uncomfortable. You could sign up for a class, get an ID and hang around all you want!

Reminds me of a guy that would "ride" circuits through the local grocery store I used to go to every Sunday morning.

He'd get behind an empty basket and fast cruise the outer perimeter of the aisles with nothing in the basket. He never wanted to slow down for people actually shopping.

It went on for at least a year. I'm not sure who kicked him out for good.

To the OP: If your local university owns the streets/roads on campus (i.e. they are private), they can indeed ban you. A lot of universities have publicly owned roads through campus and so the university could not legally keep you from using them. You may want to do some research.

Also, you must have been very imprudent in your riding in order to distinguish yourself from all of the other riders on campus. I know at my local campus, the student and staff riders are are often crazy and unpredictable.

If you really did just crash there ... obviously you are a safety hazard. If you make a claim against the university, (claim the roads were ill-maintained, for instance,) then it is a headache for the school, though they would win (riding uninvited on private property, though perhaps not posted.) if you hit a student or a car, or caused an accident .... that might get pricey for the school ("Why was this nut allowed to go racing on private roads where students are walking to classes?")

Not too hard a topic to plumb ... imagine if some stranger came to your place of business, paced off 100 meters down a corridor, and started doing 100-meter dashes, flat out.

OP never said he was riding on roads at the college. Maybe he could clarify that? Was he riding on public roads, private roads, or something else?

Perhaps a disguise of some sort would have allowed him to keep going.

Ride an English style IGH bike while wearing "professorial" looking clothing at 25 mph. If anyone stops you, say you're conducting a long term experiment on bicycling physics and can't be bothered with small talk.

If it is private property, the college might have the right to ban you a right to ban riding, but some roads though colleges might be public roads. It depends.

"Mall Walking" is common, and generally accepted in many places. They may even have organized groups that do it. But, I'd imagine that they actually talk to the management and do it in such a way not to interrupt customers. Light business hours?

Mall walking seems harmless as it takes place in the walking areas of the mall.

This grocery store guy, well the outer perimeter of the aisles is still made up of aisles with products on the shelves. So, he would fast cruise with that empty basket through the aisles that had frozen foods, meats, fish, butcher counter, eggs, cheese, milk, butter, produce, deli, and past all the checkout lanes to start another lap.

I saw him a few times get "road rage" with people that slowed him down while they were actually shopping. When he came at me I'd make eye contact and make comments that appeared to make him steer clear of me while I was loading my basket.

This guy really needed another way to exercise.

A college campus is sort of a hive, with lots of traffic (in and out) all day long...And many of the drivers are young and inexperienced. I think the campus cop did you a favor by asking you to ride elsewhere.

A cemetery would be a quiet place to ride laps.

Well, it depends.

We have a cemetery on campus. Only gravel roads. It was a quiet place to read things like "FAUST".

A couple of the cemeteries in Portland have good paved in them, and are on hills. They are popular for cyclists. Especially one that is a shortcut past a pretty gnarly hill climb on a busy narrow road.

With that in mind, respect the needs of property owners, and do your riding in a respectful way not to interrupt patrons... Don't spoil it for everyone. Also, if there is a posted "bicycle route", use it.
