where to dispose/recycle dead batteries?

My local scrapyard takes lead-acid batteries all day long, and even pays for them... but does not take Lithium

Local hardware store was taking dead Lithium batteries from tools, but I don't know if they will accept batteries from eBikes, or where they are actually sending them.

Does anyone know of anyplace you can send Lithium batteries for actual recycling?

My town in socal used to have days when they posted you could drop batteries off at a recycling center, but I don't know whether that included Lithium since I never tried (you might check to see if there's one in your area). Recently, I sold my oldest battery for a pittance to eliminate the potential problem.

your town should have a recycling center that accepts batteries. Lots of products use lithium batteries these days.

Good answer. I checked online and a site down the street will accept for $1 per pound.

They pay you? You pay them? Well, a battery isn't much more than 8 pounds anyway.
