Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is this helmet fake?

Just spotted this on eBay

Giro Aeon Mens Medium Best Road Helmet Free SHIP Matt White Red New 55 59cm | eBay

At first, I thought it were genuine because this guy is only selling helmets, and he has almost only positive feedback... but I cant seem to find this color combination anywhere else?

No doubt it is fake. I buy my "Pearl Izumi" gloves from China for $5.00 a pair. They are obvious fakes but they last as long as $40.00 genuine Pearls. As long as the helmet does it's job who cares?

I can't comment on whether the helmet is genuine or a knockoff.

That said, the bolded statement is either a troll or misinformed...the last place you want to use something that may not up-to-spec is a helmet.

While I completely agree about the not up-to-spec part, sadly helmet specs are quite laughable. Even expensive road helmets are just EPS with a few light foam pads. I actually tried to find a better helmet, and sadly, the options are VERY limited. POC, Kali and a few other are just starting to look at actually designing better helmets, but the vast majority are indistinguishable.

I actually purchased a cheap Ebay helmet. The helmet shell looks and feels like every other helmet. The straps and adjustment mechanism is low quality and didn't last very long. Next helmet will be either POC or Kali.

Where do you get knockoff cycling clothing? Does it come from the street corner in a fake Louis Vuitton bag?

The standards are very specific as are the tests, test methods and machines used in certification. Just because none of these are readily apparent from the finished product you see does it mean that it is just some EPS foam tossed into a mold.

Helmet production and certification is far more sophisticated than making a beer cooler with vents.

If you want to see something truly pushing the envelope look at the new helmets from Smith. If I can find a dealer I will have one on my head ASAP.

Well now, if the helmet did not protect your head it would not be doing its job, would it?

Pretty much, an expensive helmet and a cheap helmet all have to meet the same safety standards. However, my concern would be that if a product was truly a "fake", that is, if it's labeled with a brand name from some other manufacturer, there's a good chance that it's just never been tested and doesn't meet ANY standard. Also a possibility that it's heavier than the helmet it is copying, which would defeat the purpose.

The helmets could have been made in a custom color for a pro team, however I would be highly suspicious of anything shipping out of china.

I frequently buy new gear left over from pro teams to sell on ebay in the fall.

Are you talking about the Kyord helmets? Those look interesting, I'm curious to try one.

If that's true - I wonder how the quality of bike jerseys are from China...

China has everything. Good quality and low quality. The lower end stuff is just more prominent on eBay.

No. These are from Smith Optics. I can't remember the model name and it doesn't appear on their website. I will have a dig around for a link but the last photo I saw was on Peleton magazine...I think...

I have only bought two. I simply had to get long sleeve and short sleeve Popeye jerseys. He is my hero. The quality is good. The fabric, printing and sewing were nice but I thought the zippers were cheap. For the price I think they are fine. I paid something like $22.00 each delivered! I have purchased lights, rack bags and panniers from China. They are all pretty well made and easily worth the price. I do buy name brand stuff - I love Louis Garneau clothing but I bargain shop for it. It is much nicer than the cheap China stuff but sometimes money is tight and the China stuff is perfectly adequate.

I just got a sweet Castelli jersey and bib shorts for $38 on ebay from China! I'll buy kits from china all day but I don't think I would risk something that I might need to save my life one day.
