Last week my eight year old took her first run around the neighborhood on the 1995 Barracuda I built up for her, she loved it and wanted to finally hit the trails behind our home! I did an initial build last year around Thanksgiving but at that time she was still a little small for the 26" wheels. Thanks to to a 2.5" growth spurt in the last six months, she is now flat foot while sitting on the seat. We spun our legs on the way to the dirt and before I knew it she was dropping into her first descent like a champ; her first real go of it with hand brakes and gears, it all went smoothly. Today we went back to the dirt, she wanted to see if she improved over last week since she spent the weekend doing some road rides on her 'Cuda. As I hoped, she did great and had a blast!

I wish that you may never have a commute home like mine this evening.

Oh, the bike ride portion was awesome. The air had a nip of autumn, traffic was courteous as usual, the bike performed wonderfully, and my legs felt strong. If my boss hadn't come by to talk about somethingorother just as I was about to depart I wouldn't have had to ride so hard, but what the heck, that's wasn't a problem and it wasn't the first time.

The part I wish you never have was the train ride. Only two people occupied that end of that car, a raving lunatic/admitted loonie/alcoholic/druggie ("Yeah I'm crazy, I'm 57 and I hate life...I hate life on earth... God made package stores for people who can't stand life ... I just spent 8 days sober and just gotta' get back home 'cuz I gotta' go nuts every so often, you know...I had this friend, they found him in Florida tied to a tree with 7 blasts from a shotgun in him...I gonna' get a bunch of C clamp and put them on the rails and watch as the Acela comes by, just kidding, I like people, I hate this life...[I left out all the f words]") and me, and the Masi of course. Then the train stopped because the Amtrak train ahead of us "broke down" and we had link up to it and push it. I spent 1hr20min with this guy. Fortunately he was easily distracted. When we finally disembarked the conductor apologized.

It is a holiday here in Canuckistan so I decided that after installing some new old bars on my 1954 Raleigh that I needed to go for a pootle.

I warmed up by riding down into the river valley and then made my way back up so I could ride over to the Heritage festival which attracts nearly 500,000 people every year and pretty much every country on the planet is represented there.

I had ridden 20km when I saw a sign... from god. The lemonade was delicious and the good folks at the church even gave me some freshly sliced lemon for my tea.



The routes down into the park were packed with people so I detoured a few km to take the less travelled gravel trail and the old Raleigh handled this wonderfully... although it takes you down it is like a roller coaster with a bunch of short steep climbs and the lady I passed as I climbed that next little rise said "nice calves!"



I arrived at the festival and met some friends and then went and relaxed by the lake, drank my tea and enjoyed some excellent Reggae and Soca music being played by some rather excellent musicians at the Jamaican pavillion. My friends are camera shy and I took pictures of the band but did not want to post pictures of so many curvy women without people's permission... the Heritage Festival is also a bit of a babe fest.



I like to ride here a lot, it is a very relaxing place and the baby bobber birds were there in abundance.



Zeus porn... it was an orphan so I put it on the Raleigh.



Looking back... the little white dot is the big pavillion over the amphitheatre in the park I came from.



All in all it was a good 35 km with lots of ups and downs, good friends, great music, some wonderful lemonade, and a lucky feather that my parrot gave me this morning.

Awesome pics. JBC, I believe I could ride that terrain without my low gears! It looks lovely. And JJS, you are riding that Gitane everywhere these days. Your DeRosa is going to be jealous. Um, do you take a long-lens shot of wavy roads on every ride just to make it look hilly? Oh, I forgot, that's Rhode Island. It is hilly!

Rode to the west edge of the Gandy bridge today. First time I've made it home in time to ride in the daylight for weeks!

Didn't take the next step and cross the bay? I did that last Sat morning...Indeed something to do with plenty of light. So much debris on the shoulder/em lane. I was exhausted by the constant dodging of glass, metal, plastic, wood, and misc junk...I don't think they ever clear it! And the traffic is LOUD on the bridge, the grooved surface of the concrete makes cars and trucks HOWL!!! I took a break on the East end (south side), NEAT little park with a boardwalk through the mangroves. The WIND is a big factor if you do the cross the bay ride. It was just a light breeze, but it knocked off 4/5 mph coming back with it in my face.

Yeah, I only had time for 20 miles. Had to get back and get dinner going. Riding over the bridge, as you say, isn't pleasant. It'd be super great if the Friendship Trail bridge got the refurbishment it needs.

Guess I live a little further North than you, my ride up to, across and back home was 23. I am afraid the cost of refurbishing the Friendship bridge will be too high, Millions if not 10s of millions...Like the 65 million needed to join the trails to make it ONE from here to Titusville...COOL, but NOT in the foreseeable budget...States HAVE to balance their budgets EVERY YEAR (at least Florida does)

Didn't do one of the cool epic rides I read about here, but my wife and I took the 3-speeds for a couple of miles to the local thai restaurant, bought some take out (chicken pad thai, mango salad, thai fried rice), rode a mile or two more to the river, and had a lovely little picnic watching the ducks and dog walkers....mile or two more to go home.

Did an inaugaural ride today to help raise money for low income housing. It was in the Yakima valley area and terminated at a local winery (I don't drink wine so it didn't matter to me) . The ride was only 24 miles but I rode back to double it - was the only one who did so, at least by the time I took off. Had one guy say he was trying to catch me on my old bike and he just couldn't do it. I told him it was nothing personal I just have a mental problem where I can't let someone catch me once I'm ahead of them despite what it might do to my body. I decided to ride it hard and treat it as more of a training ride since yesterday was an easier pace. Great route on some rolling terrain through farmland. Only suffered one flat in the middle of goat head thorn country but it appears to have been from a little rock that worked it's way through the front tire.



Saw this beautiful 94 Bianchi (according to the owner. She said it was a gift from her husband when they got married that year. They got matching bikes). There was also a Trek 900 that the owner said was an '81 but I think it was closer to the mid-80's. Also saw vintage Scott and Bianchi hybrids.

I did a ride with three of my fellow Chiefs this morning; out to Turtle Cove once again for a total of 32 miles. Since my Mondia has been torn down in anticipation of the Medici frameset, I went to get a rental bike until I have my own once again. No road bikes in my size, so I was limited to their selection of MTBs. Not a bad ride at all!

I rode 46 miles this morning. Cool around 55 at start, warmed up to 70. sunny and nice. The Gitane had a flat so I gave the De Rosa some much needed attention.



I saw a pod of hot rods at a diner.







They said they were going to a meet in Putnam CT where a thousand other oldies would be!

Just a few miles around the neighborhood, shakedown on the new fender mounts...smooth roads, brick cobbles....found rattles...SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!!! need to add some dampeners somehow....Been ages since I had anything with fenders. Hit a couple of the closer LBSs too, looking for 27s.....NO gumwalled 27s to be had...."But we can ORDER them"...Doh.....SO CAN I!
