SRAM to Shimano

I have a 2020 Surly Bridge Club with a SRAM SX groupset. I’m wanting to switch to Shimano Deore. My rear hub is a Novatech 32h. Will that hub work with the Deore, or do I need to make changes?

If you are sticking to the same amount of cogs in the back you don't need to change cassettes. If you are upgrading from 11 speed to 12 speed then you will not be able to use a Deore cassette because it uses the new micro spline freehub body standard while SX uses the old HG freehub. You can however just buy a 12 speed sunrace cassette or a SX Sram cassette since they just use good old HG freehub body. The key thing to keep straight is a cassette that starts with a 10 tooth cog takes a special freehub body while ones that start with a 11 tooth cog just use the standard style.

If you go with a Shimano 12-speed chain you should get a compatible chainring, which might be difficult to match with SRAM's direct mount (I think Wolf Tooth makes one but that's it). A KMC X12 chain will work with the Sunrace 12-speed cassette and your SRAM chainring.

Ehhhh, I would go to SLX or XT if I was looking at upgrading, I am not really a big fan of just side grading even if I do like Shimano more and would rather have it then SRAM. SX and Deore are basically at the same level(ish) but I might rather put that money towards other upgrades that might make the bike better for me fit/comfort wise or way better shifting and braking.

If you are keeping the same number of speeds you really don't need a new cassette but if your freehub body is an 11 speed freehub body you could swap. If it is XD/XDR then no.
