Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tendonitis/Stress Fracture

Hey guys, quick question for you,

After running 10x800 meters yesterday I had some major pain in my foot, so, being a long distance runner I naturally worried about a stress fracture. I went to the school clinic here (University of Mississippi) and they took x-rays, but could not tell me conclusively if it was a stress fracture. The doc said it was most likely bad tendonitis of the tarsals or something like that. We're still waiting for the radiologist to come back with something conclusive.

So my question is, can I ride with bad tendonitis in my foot ('till i can run again?). Or even with a small, apparently unvisible stress fracture? I know im gonna get those people that say "call your doctor!" but it was a school clinic and I didnt even get the guy's name, and I cant just show up and ask, its a very crowded place, so any advice is appreciated!

Thanks guys!

Of course you can ride with bad tendinitis in your foot. However it may not heal, and it may hurt like hell still. Your best bet would be to take a few days off, and keep icing it. If you do want to go for a ride make sure you ice a lot after your ride. If it happens to be a stress fracture rest is probably your best option.

Not sure about a stress fracture on your foot as it probably bends a lot during the pedal stroke.

The reason I started biking recreationally was because I had shin splints and I couldnt run.

I don't know about "IF" you should ride, but assuming you can ride without too much discomfort, I would recommend that you keep the gearing low and the rpm's high to lessen the work load per pedal stroke. That way you get the theraputic movement along with aerobic benefits.

I would any advise (especially my advise) through a qualified MD first.

I was a long distance runner in high school and had at least 2 stress fractures. The first one was the worst and involved a set of crutches for about 6 weeks. I wasn't allowed to do anything at practice and lost all of my cross season. That being said, stress fractures heal the best if you keep weight off of them and don't try to rush back in to it.

My stress fracture was in my tibia, shin, and even hurt during riding an elliptical machine or stationary bike. The only way the doctor found it was with a bone scan.

My advice would be to wait for the doctor to tell you what you have and then ask about riding a bike. If you have a stress fracture and keep running it will only get bigger until it fails. When it does fail I believe you end up with a compound fracture. Good luck, I hope you don't have a stress fracture.

Thanks for the responses guys, I really appreciate it. Ill take today, friday and the weekend off and see where I am by monday, and Ill wait for the radiologist report.

Its driving me crazy not being able to run or ride though! I suppose ill have to do some abs or plyometrics or something to keep myself sane!

If you bone is BROKEN (that's what a fracture is), you are taking a serious chance. Don't risk it until you hear from your doc. Do you really want to risk your long-term health? Of course not.

1. Get a good diagnosis
2. Talk to a sports doc about options
3. Maintain your long-term health!

It could take up to 2 weeks to see a stress fracture on x-ray...

Some 'stress' fractures are microscopic and you need to wait for the body to start healing before you can identify it on x-ray...

Take it easy and see a specialist...
