Heads up, you can’t use a standard chain checker to check the flat top chains. Found that out the hard way. I plan on changing every 2500 miles from now on.

Pedro has more copy covering the benefits of a 3-point chain checker. Essentially, it's more accurate than, say the old-style Park guage.

I mentioned that yesterday's ride took me repeatedly through a charity ride on parts of my route. I think some of the riders overestimated their fitness, especially one guy I encountered. I was riding along a road where drivers are routinely going 40 or more and a rider ahead of me suddenly slows down and unclips his left foot, then couldn't unclip his right and somehow falls to his left, and basically fell out into the road. Luckily no cars were passing then, or he'd have fallen right into their path. I went around him and then looped back to check on him. He'd managed to get up and get well off the road. Poor bugger had a quad cramp. Since I had nothing that would help, I wished him luck and rode on.
I was VERY happy to have the Varia, because he fell too close in front of me for me to stop, and he fell completely across the bike lane and halfway across the traffic lane. I had to swerve almost to the centerline to avoid him. And I had JUST passed another rider who was only a little slower - which is why I had been watching the Garmin for signals from the Varia - if I jammed on the brakes I'd have had him right up my back.

This must have been what velo saw that time I rode with him. It still keeps me up at night.

looks fancy. My LBS has a digital checker I wonder if that is more accurate.

Digital doesn’t imply accuracy.

Our group happened to be riding some of the same climbs as them. There were people struggling, walking their bikes, and not having a good time. I felt bad for them.

I was just a wee bit too young to have awareness of these films from the mid 1970's. It must be halloween nostalgia going on.

I’m actually pleased to see them looking respectable as opposed to looking pathetic. The Jets are looking respectable too. I can’t remember the last time they were both doing well.
