Edited - below was the original goal set on 01-03-2012
1. Complete an SR series
2. Complete a P-12 and R-12
3. Imperial Century a week (got this from a BF'er and it's a cool 'go for it' goal!)
4. Metric Century a week (when considered in addition to #3, this actually encourages me to work on speed without being onerous.)
5. ***Perimeter ride around the State of Louisiana (self-supported but not a "tour" whose purpose is sightseeing)
(***-> a bit of a pipe dream goal, but, if things work out, may try for this next October)

New goal set - 05-07-2012
Complete the 100 Imperial centuries in 106-110 days Self-Challenge I came up with.
The rest of the original goals have been tossed out the window and no longer matter.

- century a month (2011 was fourth year in a row that I completed that, so this will be year #5)
- 18 centuries for the year
- 10,000 km (abt 6,200 miles) total mileage
- 100,000 meters (abt 328,000 ft) of climbing
- ride from Ithaca to Virginia Beach, about 600 miles; I've done it the past three years via Eastern Shore of MD/VA, twice on my upright touring bike, once on my recumbent; this time I might go via DC and western shore of the Bay, not sure yet which bike I'll take
- ride r/t from Ithaca to State College PA for RBR recumbent rally in June
- Highlander Death B4 Dismount ride (Canandaigua Lake NY) in September
- Tour de Shunk century tour in Endless Mt region of PA

I'd love to do the California Death Ride but don't think I'll be able to make it out there this year.

I am in northern Italy this year, so I will be trying several new (to me) brevet routes over the next few months. I also see some lovely alpine climbs in my future. My main rando event for the year should be the 1600 km randonnee 1001 miglia in mid-August. But what I am really looking forward to this year is some bike touring, perhaps a week or two in Sicily and/or Spain.

Is a P-12 twelve permanents in a year? I thought the permanents counted towards the R-12 too.

Sorry if that's a dumb question. Randonneuring is new to me.

Edit- oops, I posted that before reading post #23, which explained it. is the P-12 a formal achievement? That would be manageable for me I think.

Oops again, just went over to the RUSA site and figured it out. I think I'm going to try that (P-12, gotta walk before you can run), RAIN, and maybe the Ohio Gran Fondo. That would make for a great year for me.

My second R-12. The big goal is the Rocky Mountain 1200. I am on the rider list and this will be my first 1200!

The nice thing about populaires is they can be short enough to do fairly regularly without taking all day (a flat ~100km can be ~4-5 hours). One local guy is able to knock out "official" metric century populaires 2-4 times a week after work during the long summer daylight hours on a whim/regular basis. His speed developed naturally/as a result, he says, making the time requirement even shorter. So, I'm going to try his "method" - ride lots. Didn't Eddie Merccx(sp) suggest something like that?

After a certain point for me, "official awards" just go into a keepsake book/box. They can be pulled out to provide tangible proof of accomplishment/action if someone else "challenges" a claim. Otoh, other people have what we used to call, "I love me" wall displays. Actual award medals are nice for that. But that's not me.

One thing it took me a while to notice is that half the randonneurs I know own tandems, even though many, I've never seen riding one. Ask around, you may can come up with a loaner for a single 200k.

Get so the 100K pops are easy. Do at least one 200k brevet/permanent. Be faster on my bike than I am now.

I like the idea of this, and have been keeping it in mind since I saw the post. Tomorrow will be the last chance to do a century for the first week of the year, so I'm planning on doing one.

How varied have the routes been in your 24 weeks? Big loops starting/ending at home? Riding new places? Just doing 20mi laps to get it done occasionally?

When I started randonneuring, the Manitoba Randonneurs had two tandem couples. One couple rode their tandems all the time ... the other couple rode theirs for shorter distances, and then he rode a single for the longer distances.

When we started talking about trying a tandem, an acquaintence of ours offered us his to borrow for a while ... we had it for about 5 months, and did quite a bit of riding before we decided to buy one of our own.

So if a person were to make a comment to a local club that he/she might be interested in trying a tandem, there is a chance someone might offer one on loan.

Bike wise I've got a few goals to knock out this year...
  • P-12 series
  • At least one Brevet a month March through November
  • A 300K with bonus miles for a double century in September
  • Tour de Cure
  • Hotter than Hell 100
  • A couple of other local T-shirt rides scattered throughout the year

Plus just enjoy the time on the bike and have fun!

California Triple Crown. I'll be driving down for two of them, so they need to be a week apart. The third I'll have to fly down for. I'll be doing them on a fixie, but due to scheduling may have to just eat a hilly one. Hoping I can include Davis, I heard the food is great!

I spent most of 2011 riding in New Hampshire and have ridden a nice size chunk of the state. I have several routes I've been planning on using as the main focus for the winter months. Granted since the winter has been rather lame...THUS FAR(about to change later this week and into the weekend), I have been instead still riding new territory crossing over into Vermont and doing rides over there to keep things 'spicy'. Both of the first two weeks of the new year has had the 100+ miler focused on VT instead of NH. I'm planning on having summer being focused mostly on VT, northern MA, eastern NY. I will ride some of NH that I didn't get to last year and adding it to the list as well. I want to see how early I can pull off the Kanc/118 Double Century. Hoping to do it...all daylight/solo by the end of April, maybe even early to mid April.

Right now, winter months, I have a three or four(#4 is brand new in the past week or two) of different locations I prefer to ride to. I decide this based on what is available along the route. I want somewhere I can get in once an hour if I need to so I can warm up. I've only needed the option once thus far but I want to give myself the leeway...better safe than sorry.

During the summer months, anything goes. I still want to try to keep it so I can make a stop to fill up water bottles/empty my bladder once an hour or so but it isn't quite as critical as it is this time of year.

I HIGHLY prefer loop rides versus out and back. You can see some of the routes I've ridden https://ridewithgps.com/users/63462. This is the list of the longest of the rides I've rode over the past year. I haven't did the 4x4 yet, hoping to do it come late May/early June but I got to wait and see if NH gov't is going to let bikers use Rt 1 Bypass or not to get into ME. If not then I have to wait until 2014 before I could even hope to try it. A very critical drawbridge is being removed and it isn't expected to be reopened until late 2013. I made the rules for the ride that are posted on the ridewithgps route. I plan to stick to them whenever I do the ride. It's a tricky ride since it goes along the seacoast. You pretty much have to do it during the week before school gets out for the summer. Otherwise your fighting beach traffic and pretty much you can forget about being able to do it all during daylight hours. Pretty much their is only a 2-3 week window of opportunity each year for doing it. I got lucky to be able to do the 3x3 this past year but I only had around 45-60 minutes of daylight left. I wasn't in shape and neither was the bike(small chainring only, front shifter wasn't working).

I definitely want the flexibility of having different places to ride to. Since I don't own a car anymore and do errand running with the bike I see enough of the same territory errand running so I use the long rides to get heck away from home. I fess, I really want to get away, hoping for a nice long bike trip this summer but time shall tell if that is going to happen or not. Hurricane Irene killed the planned trip last year.

I have three rides that I am training for - the Lewis and Clark 24 Hour Time Trial, the Coup de Cascades RAAM Qualifier and the Ring of Fire 24 Hour Time Trial. In addition, I am coordinating a team of folks bring the Northwest Tandem Rally to Salem, Oregon in 2012. I also will be crewing for folks for Race Around Oregon and The Furnace Creek 508.

My goal is to not break my collar bone this year :-(

Oh, and a few other things:
- increase 20 minute power
- work on riding flat land (I do better in the hills, so I want to improve my weakness)
- find better riders to ride with

Specific rides I'm planning on:
- Lewis & Clark Ultra 24hr
- STP (one day)
- OUCH (Larch Mtn. Time Trial)

I want to get enough base miles in to do another 200K. Maybe by summertime I'll be close, but it's hard to say. I haven't been able to ride much at all in the last 6 months (3 of which I was unable to walk without crutches). I'm working my way back up.

I also want to finish building my 'bent trike so I can see if they really do help on long rides.

Start the year at 1000 km per month and end it at 1000 miles per month. Do a double metric century once a month. 99% of my riding is solo and unsupported. Do a double imperial century, supported or not. And finally, do an imperial century non-stop. This one would almost have to be supported.
