The shift points are nice to demonstrate the instant torque. My car has the "sport sound" option which is switchable. When on, the thing sounds like a Star Wars ship going into hyperspace.

I rode my 3 speed bike to junior high but it wasn't cool anymore when I got to high school. I crashed one day and broke my front tooth.

No car either until I finished high school and bought my own. I did drive my parents' cars to work, but otherwise I was on my bike.
I had one of my parents' cars catch fire when I was leaving work and started it. An electrical fire started under the dash. Scared the crap out of me.

I bought my first car new when I was in grad school. 1981 Civic. LSS turtled it on Storrow Dr. in Boston by skidding sideways into a Jersey barrier on the big curve by the Mass General. We hung from our seatbelts while she picked change from the headliner, until some good samaritans came and ripped the back windows off and got us out. I was on the way to my best friend's funeral. Good times.
You certainly win! I'll never be critical of my wife's driving after reading your story.

The car we just bought for my daughter is an '07 GTI. It's s ton of fun to drive, and I'm a bit envious that she gets to drive it more than I do. Like me, my daughter gets joy from driving a car at a rapid pace on twisty roads. Her skill set is improving quite quickly, and the GTI is wonderfully compliant in going exactly where you point it. She's figuring out that real-world forces are a lot different than what she experiences while playing the F1 video game - LOL.

I brought my first car in high school. A 56 Beetle. I should have kept that car. It would be worth something these days. but it had rusty A-pillars and I was a very broke student. My parents brought my second car for me: they felt bad about the VW. It was a Triumph Herald. that started the rot: I continued to buy old english or french cars and spend a small fortune keeping them on the road. I often had to bike through winter at university as I was saving money to repair the current old car.

My wife can’t drive a stick. I had a 6 speed toyota when we first started dating. Thought it would be a good idea to teach her. After about 10 mins, she asked what that smell was, I responded 2,000 dollars burning away. Had to replace the clutch a week later. I was driving back to school and was going up a hill and it wouldn’t stay in gear, ended up rolling to the bottom.

An '86 GTI was my second new car. Had it for 10 years. That's the one Mrs. GJ and I drove across the country and back. No A/C, which was rarely a problem here but which was more problematic, driving back across the country in early July.

In that era. my best friend had a Scirocco. I always thought a GTI-version of that would have been spectacular. Apparently, they existed, but not in the US.

We had OEM AC installed in 1989 when we moved to MD and drove it until daughter arrived in 1991, when traded it in on a Taurus wagon. It was starting to burn some oil, but what a great little car! Silver with black/gray interior and red accents.

I had an 84 Scirocco that I loved. Bought it when I finished law school. Came home after a weekend away, and found my ex-wife killed the transmission after seeing a fluid trail up the driveway. That marriage had failure written all over it.
