Saddle Bag Maker..?
Does anyone recognize the maker or brand name of this saddle bag? It looks to be of good quality and was attached to a top of the line nineties something road bike that came my way the other day..?

At first, I thought it looked like a Banjo Brothers Minnehaha bag, but the tag on it looks like "Baggins Bags - Sacks for Cycles".

It's a Rivendell Baggins bag. I've owned several through the years. Looking back at my flickr page for a moment, I see I had one at least as early as 2001. I still have a ratty one built for them by Duluth Pack. If memory serves, there was some sort of kerfuffle between Rivendell and Duluth. They started out relatively cheap and got progressively pricer - but my memory is they were still cheaper than the Berthoud bag they ... uh, pay tribute to. The Baggins bag was launched about the time Rivendell started branching out from selling Carradice bags and they pre-date the matchy-matchy twee-ness of the tweed bags they did for a while, which eventually were superseded by their currrent Sackville lineup - which includes a new variation of this bag for $131.
If you have one of the variants with the steel rivets holding the backstrap, watch them carefully. My current specimen, purchased in 2004 for my wife before she decided cycling wasn't her thing, wound up being stored in the garage in South Carolina for a few years. The chromed steel rivets literally rusted out and the leather cross strap rotted badly and tore off. You can see the white cotton bookbinding tape patching it from the inside peeking through the holes. Maybe someday I'll have the local cowboy saddle and garb shop repair it for me.

Thanks folks. I see the words there now but, being unfamiliar with bags, I did not know what I was looking at. See? Anyway, the bag will be up for grabs in the Spring along with some other interesting, recently found items.

Frost River also made a bag close to identical to the Duluth and Baggins bags made for and sold through Rivendell. I just checked - they still do. I have and still use a 20ish year old Baggins and a 20ish year old Frost River. They look their age, but still do the job.
BTW, the current Rivendell iteration of this bag will only work with Brooks B17-like bag loops. By contrast, the Baggins, Frost River and Duluth bags will cheerfully attach to the saddle rails.

Berthoud is the only saddle-bag with this shape I have seen. I never investigated Rivendell.

I have one of the first or second generation V-O croissant bags, which is a similar shape and connects via saddle rails rather than bag loops. It's very handy.

I thought those tweed bags they had were pretty cool. Asking to get your stuff wet, but still pretty cool.
