Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Since I'm still COVID positive by rapid test, but not febrile for a number of days, I looked up "Exercise and COVID", and of course, the recommendation is to work back into it gradually. So, I guess no HIIT for me today.

It's weird. They take the time to pick up the poop then just leave the bag lying on the trail. Little bags of poop all over the place.

There is a ridge near a housing development that can be used to access the mountain trails but the last time I went that way there was so much poop it was disgusting. Like, hard to breathe. My friend called it the "tour de poop".

Lately I see vape cartridges everywhere. Some look like car fobs or remote controls.

That image is from 5th Ave and 79th St in NYC, sometime during my youth. Those pretzels, whose sensory qualities I can imagine vividly after 40 or 50 years, were heated over charcoal or something and were uniquely smokey and satisfying on a freezing winter day, purchased with the last change in your pocket. I never developed a taste for the chestnuts though.

Looks like there's a pretzel joint in the mall here, and Grand Canyon Brew Pub supposedly has em. I'm very skeptical of this rave review but I might brave the weather and ride over there this afternoon

One issue I discovered with the old wheels is that the spokes are threaded all the way through the nipples, so I can't use either a screwdriver or the nipple driver I just bought to unscrew the old spokes. I'll have to loosen each one quite some way with a spoke wrench first.

Today when I rode through the park there was a large group dancing to some fast-beat music. They seemed to be having a great time, laughing and hollering. Wish Mrs John would try something like that.

Years ago there was a guy in my club who was one of the best climbers I've known. He was into aerobic dance when he wasn't riding a bike or running. I couldn't do it but it's interesting.

Strolling through FB Marketplace, I saw one of those ads that I always get a hoot out of. Nice old bike, not my size, but the saddle was slammed all the way down till the curved head of the seatpost was the only part visible. The only thing missing was "I'm 5'8", and it fits me great"

They are not as ubiquitous as they used to be. BITD, there were hot dog carts on nearly every corner in center city that sold soft pretzels. I worked in one for a summer during high school. Sold lots of pretzels. IIRC, they cost ten cents back then.

Stop testing. Some people shed viral fragments for several weeks and can test positive.

You should only test to confirm the diagnosis. Once positive it’s ok to stop and just follow the recommendations from CDC.

Back in 2016, A supporter of You Know Who said if they lost, there'd be taco trucks on every corner, and I often grieve for what we lost. That would have been AWESOME!!!!!!

Roasted chestnuts no. But raw they are delicious.

On Monday I lost a good friend of forty years. He went out mushroom hunting (morel season in se Ohio) and died of an apparent heart attack.
His wife of 54 years and his son, of course, are in shock. He/they likely had no idea he had a heart condition. My dad once went in for a routine checkup and they admitted him on the spot and did quadruple bypass surgery the next day.
He was 74 and active his whole life.
