Who is riding the VivaBikeVegas Century or Red Rocks ride?

Anybody? I am signed up for the Century, er ummm, 115 mile funride. Isn't that just like county government, can't even get the length of a Century right.

Just wondering who else is out there.

I really would like to ride over the new bridge, but I'm not up to a century/115. And my car can barely make the climb into Boulder City... I can't imagine trying it on a bike.

I wish they had a medium-distance ride that went to the bridge, but they don't.

Me and ObreaShawn live along Horizon Ridge. If the ride over the bridge wears us out we will bail @mile 70. Then for November we are thinking about Heart of AZ. Let me know if you need some support.

Any one know if the 115mi. distance is hilly or have climbs?

I am not to century level yet but would like to attempt it if it is mainly flat and low hills. I usually do 30mi. solo rides in about ~1hr 20min on lots of high rolling hill type terrain in between my swim days. I know I can do the red rock route easy. I was thinking about the century because I would like to experience the ride over hoover dam.

I don't want to attempt this as my first century and bonk out from hills/climbs before I make the bridge . I've driven around the outskirts of Vegas a lot and for the most part it seems flat. I'm not sure about the route for the century.

Route maps and elevation profiles, etc. are here.
https://www.rtcsouthernnevada.com/viv...egas/index.cfm

The start point for all rides is downtown. I was thinking that the ride to the bridge ought to be all downhill, but there is a steep climb from about miles 6 to 12.

Looks like they are expecting that some people will ride to the bridge and then bail out. However, you're on your own if you do. Both of the pickup points will require you to bike up to Boulder City, a 2 to 3 mile climb of at least 10% grade.

Cyclists who plan to no longer participate after riding across the bridge must arrange to be picked up at the River Mountain Loop Trail or Historic Railroad Tunnel parking lots. (Click on links for Google Maps location) PLEASE NOTE: Vehicles trying to reach the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge will be turned away by Nevada Highway Patrol. It is recommended that cyclists inform RTC staff members during packet pickup of their decision to not complete the full course and that cyclists do not take a timing chip as there will be a $45 charge for timing chips that are not turned back in after the ride.

The elevation from the start to Boulder city is gradual up and down. From Boulder City to the bridge looks aggressive on the up down part. That part scares me as well. The good news is that for every mile up there is a mile down. It is a gradual uphill from Eastern and Horizon Ridge through Blue Diamond, past Red Rock State Park to Charleston. Once you get there you have pretty clear sailing down Charleston to the RTC lot.

This will be my fist Century as well.

larry,

I agree a shorter distance would be tempting...

Late July I took a horrid fall on wet concrete (I was careless and was traveling to quick for my reactions in the situation) and am still recovering, but started riding slowly two weeks ago with very sore arms and painful hands. I shan't be able to attempt a Century, and would like a shorter distance to be one of the fortunate riders to cross the new bridge... Another day another time for me, but I wish everyone the best on this ride. Please remember to check the camera as you will want the photos to prove you were on the new bridge...

There have been several requests for entries on Craigslist the last several weeks... Interbike 2010 passes were also offered on craigslist for $30 morning of the last day of the event... I wish you the best, hope to see a few photos posted after the ride. I have not recoved enough from my fall to attempt the ride...

I hope you get to feeling better and recover soon. I will pack my camera before I pack spare tubes. That bridge looks absolutely incredible. I did get to Interbike both at Bootleg and at the Sands. I had drool all over me both times.

' hope everyone had big fun yesterday on the ride.

We did the 115 miler on our Tandem.....it was a long day for us because as usual we were not very quick going up the long grades but had a good time coming down them. The climb from the new Bridge to the top of the hill above Boulder City was pretty tough while the ride up Blue Diamond and then up to the entrance to Red Rock Canyon was not that bad and there was no wind to speak of beyond a slight cool one which was very nice. The long down hill ride to the finish was as good as it gets except for a million traffic lights.

The organizers did a pretty nice job overall with the event....The police escort for the first 9 miles was cool and absolutely necessary with a mass start of that size. They missed it a bit with the first few rest stops as they were simply overwhelmed with too many people hitting them all at once... but... everyone made the best if it.

Again, nice ride, nice weather... it was all good.

Hey, which tandem were you. I saw several. I paired up with another mid 50's rider at the starting line and he flatted at 7 miles. We got passed by a couple of tandems at that point. Do you remember a couple of grey haired guys wrestling a front tire on the first climb?

My time posted at 485, just under 10 hours. I am slow but consistent. Yeah, that climb to the entrance of Bootleg is the killer. I ran out of water on the climb to Blue diamond. That hurt.

Overall that was a tremendous experience. It was my first century or even organized ride. Loved it all. Good support.

I was there that day on a cruise boat on the lake. My wife's HS class from Ohio had their reunion in Las Vegas. We had a view of the bridge and the dam at about 2 PM, give or take.

Great photos! Sounds like an epic ride.

Over the weekend I learned that the bridge is 900 feet over the Colorado River. That makes it the second highest bridge in America. The ride was very well supported and the shirts/jerseys have that once in a lifetime feel.

I'm glad they named the bridge after Pat Tilman.
