The first photo was taken by me in the parkinglot of the Bike Exchange with an old motorola Moto cell phone. The second was taken by the shop manager who was in charge of photographing bikes for sale. Better lighting, better camera, better technique. I don't know any details.

One thing I have learned is not to take pictures in direct sun if possible as it tends to wash out the image.

Cool bike! Do we think the Williams crank might be original? It debuted in the Fall of '62, so probably didn't show up on many bikes until '63. Could your bike be that recent, or do you think the crank was "upgraded" later?
The bike is probably not '63 or newer, because we'd expect to see Universal 61 brakes if the bike was built up after '61. Universal sidepulls continued to exist (model 68 for example), but top of the line bikes with Universals generally got the centerpulls, once they were available. Unitl centerpulls went out of fashion again of course.

We have had quite a bit of rain this year and my early morning canyon ride did not disappoint! The stream was flowing pretty good at the crossings and the sounds were amazing . The ItalVega looks right at home laying against the weeds!

What I can surmise about the build on this bike is that it was likely a frameset build well after it was born. Based on the date I can figure on parts, like the crankset, the parts on the build are ALL younger than the frame, which by my research is a '59 or '60 (most likely a 1960 model). Cranks, brakes, handlebar, shift levers, derailleurs and everything else post-dated the frame by a few years. My imagination sees this frame hanging on a wall in a bike shop somewhere in the midwest (probably Wastyn Cycles in Chicago), and after a few years of not finding a buyer, they built it up with parts that were in the shop. I would imagine that like today, it was easier to sell a complete bike than a frameset.

So yes, while I think the Williams crankset is "original," I don't think it's something to hang a hat on for timestamping this frame. There is a build thread in the C&V forum here for the most current state of its restoration. The project slowed down over the winter with a potential hairline crack in the top tube that I don't think actually is a crack. Still trying to figure out how I want to move forward on this one.

Well I'm not iab , but yes that's how they made 'em at first. Of course the first GS derailer was also made differently to use that placement of the stop. So first-edition GS isn't compatible with the later hanger, the familiar style we all grew up with.

Didja also notice the big ol' 4 mm adjuster screw? and the unsightly bulge in the dropout required to let that oversized screw pass through? Maybe they shoulda kept the M4 screw, would have resisted bending better. Many a heartbreak of bent DO adjusters could have been avoided.

My favorite part is the superscript "o" after Brev, I think it's how they abbreviated "Brevettato". Also love the "open C" typeface.
