I'm surprised no one has posted the 'true' team jersey here-- the "50+" jersey of this forum!
I personally like wearing jerseys, and have several pro team jerseys with special significance. I rode in the Basque Country of Spain, so I have a Euskatel jersey (I also really like the orange color of it). I got a KELME jersey from a friend, and it is one of my favorites because of the fabric. My daughter's father in law gave me 3 jerseys from Colombia-- all from pro teams there.
But as has been said, to each his own. I rarely ride without a bike-specific jersey because I use the pockets... and t-shirts or underarmour don't have pockets.

One of the benefits of being an old guy (and there aren't too many) is no longer caring what anyone thinks of what you're wearing.
My 98-year-old father was a lifelong bicycle enthusiast. He used to commute 10 miles 50 years ago on his Raleigh 10-speed. He always wore regular street clothes with metal spring clips to keep his cuffs out of the chain.
I stopped in his house to drop something off last weekend. It was cold so I was wearing tights and a hi-viz windbreaker, along with cycling gloves and my helmet. I overheard him telling my 93-year-old mother that I came dressed in my "full bicycle safety gear" and I looked "weird."

Pondering the replies on this thread. I received as a gift an XL Cofidis team jersey, which I think looks cool and I would wear it with pride.
Unfortunately, a race fit XL from a European manufacturer translates into a Medium in the States. It looks awful. But I'm doing well 4 days into my diet. Who knows, I might be able to fit into it, someday.
The bestest jersey for us over 50ers is the Plus 50 jersey. It is visible for miles, gets me lots of comments, and serves as a built-in excuse when I begin to fade.

My take...
Anyone that will laugh about you wearing a team jersey will laugh regardless; after all, 50+ on a bike FLIES in the face of modern convention, and the stupid 'future of America' thinks that non-conformity is wearing cotton shoelaces in your patent leather dress shoes!
The only caveat I would give you is this -- do you dress in such a way that you'd fit in with the heroes of 'People of Wal-Mart, dot com'? If NO, then you're OK.

I think it has already been indicated. To the people that we don’t much care what they think old guys look weird riding road bikes no matter what they wear. 
To non biking people anyone over 25 riding a MTB looks like they are suffering mid life crisis.
To a lot of us in this forum we ask, what old guys are they talking about?

Anyone who's ridden most of their lives and continues to ride will continue to look great in a cycling jersey. You realy can't tell from across a road how old a fit-looking cyclist is; most look under 30 regardless of age, as long as they pedal properly.
Unfortunately, if you have weight issues, lycra tends to make you look like a sausage. Wool is probably a better choice, especially if you can find a more "relaxed fit."
If you are fat, like wearing high socks, and live in cooler climates, I think it would be much more visually tenable to wear tweed knickers with argyle socks, maybe a tweed hunting jacket, and a shirt and tie. Very classy outfit. Ungodly hot in the summer, though. The absolute worst thing you can wear if you're not race/randonneur fit is lycra shorts with unshaven legs and a cycling jersey that is too small (shows a bare patch above the shorts) or is too large (back pockets hang down over the rear wheel. This has far more to do with aesthetics than with looking stupid.
And yes, that's me in the avatar, driving the tandem at age 57. I think cycling can be raised to an art form, and good art requires a firm and solid technique, but the performance can be timeless. Cycling, art, aesthetics, technique, they are all related. Age is irrelevant.

Wearing a jersey at our age is more about team or brand loyalty. Fly the flag brother. No one has ever mistaken me for Charles Barkley when i wear his jersey. They just grin and know I'm a fan. Fly your flag.
