Shrouded Figure on old front hub.
It might not show up too well in this photograph, but this front hub has a shrouded monklike figure engraved on it. It seems a little odd for a bicycle component. The eBay listing calls it an NOS Raleigh hub. Does anyone know the story behind the image?

This is the famed Raleigh Industries logo. It has an Elizabethan male,figure slightly stooped presenting a shield or placard with intertwined R and I; for Raleigh Industies. It was often found on Raleigh /Nottingham made parts on the clones and private label three speeds. Triumph, Robin Hood, etc. "sub" brands or AMF re-branded Hercules or even Huffy "Sportsman" models would have various parts with this stamp.

Sir Walter Raleigh, that's who that is. I think the story is that Sir Walter laid his coat in a mud puddle so Queen Elizabeth didn't see the mud, or get it on her person, or something like that. Very gallant. He came to a sticky end, though.

Back in the '60's, you got Coupons with your Raleigh smokes which could be redeemed for "prizes" once you had enough. It's not a bike, but smoke enough and you could start Junior's love for cycling off with this swell tricycle! (From a Raleigh Prize catalog - 1968, I think.)
