Shrouded Figure on old front hub.
It might not show up too well in this photograph, but this front hub has a shrouded monklike figure engraved on it. It seems a little odd for a bicycle component. The eBay listing calls it an NOS Raleigh hub. Does anyone know the story behind the image?

This is the famed Raleigh Industries logo. It has an Elizabethan male, figure slightly stooped presenting a shield or placard with intertwined R and I; for Raleigh Industies. It was often found on Raleigh /Nottingham made parts on the clones and private label three speeds. Triumph, Robin Hood, etc. "sub" brands or AMF re-branded Hercules or even Huffy "Sportsman" models would have various parts with this stamp.

Sir Walter Raleigh, that's who that is. I think the story is that Sir Walter laid his coat in a mud puddle so Queen Elizabeth didn't see the mud, or get it on her person, or something like that. Very gallant. He came to a sticky end, though.

Dang, can’t figure out how to get the video to embed. But it’s a classic.

I first heard that as a young Marine flying down to Memphis to go bomb loading school in Covington Tenn. still makes me laugh though.

Back in the '60's, you got Coupons with your Raleigh smokes which could be redeemed for "prizes" once you had enough. It's not a bike, but smoke enough and you could start Junior's love for cycling off with this swell tricycle! (From a Raleigh Prize catalog - 1968, I think.)

One of the ways I jive my Brit buddy is his pronunciation of the bike or Sir Walter as RALLY
I keep telling him we have a city and a cigarette named after him, and it's RAW-LEE.
He doesn't see the humor.

^^^^^^ The young fop in the background is thinking "Heavens, I best not take to smoking like Sir Walter, or surely I'll suffer the cursed fate of male pattern baldness!"

^^^ Eh, I have an overactive imagination. Still, if you've got to be doused an adult beverage seems like a good medium to me.

Hey, is that the geometry spec for the '62 Competition that Sir Walter is working out on that piece of parchment there?

The 'potato' reference only works if you've seen the second series of Blackadder. The episode in question is titled 'Potato', funnily enough.

Very funny episode, especially the exotic "wine" presented as a gift at the end (and produced by Baldric.) The only show I've seen Tom Baker in outside of Dr. Who.
