I would post a link but I'm not allowed to yet. Does anyone know more about this?

The approach there is a convoluted mess. Honestly, I've nearly been tagged by a truck a time or 2 & I know how to navigate that spot.

In 2018 I managed to bumble thru there from Green Lake, across that bridge on the way to Rat city bikes. Had lunch then went on to a Des Moines motel.

Dumb driver. If he had stayed at the scene, he probably would have been released but now he's a hit-and-run offender which probably means jail-time.

Been over this a million times. The bridge has a dedicated bike lane (seen on the left in the first photo). Narrow bridge, don't take chances. If the reports in the news are anything to go by, drivers seem to be inclined to leave the scene. Speaking only for myself, because of this apparent tendency, when there's a protected lane you can bet that's the one I'll be occupying.
From the news article, it appears he was crossing 90 degrees to traffic. Perhaps he realized he'd missed the bike lane, was on a narrow bridge with little wiggle room, and crossed over to the left to stop, lift his bike over the barrier to get onto the bike lane proper. Sad in any case. The driver may well have been suddenly surprised seeing a cyclist broadside in front of him on that narrow bridge, but leaving the scene is unforgivable.
