Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road shoes for those with a wide foot ?

Hi,

Who makes the best road shoes for those of us, with rather wide feet?

Thanks in advance.

I know Lake makes shoes in Wide. I've recently purchased a pair of CX331 in wide, and out of the couple of shoes I've tried before the purchase they fit fine. Can't give you a review though because I have yet to wear yet. Been too lazy to get them set up, have to heat mold it and put on cleats.....

Gotta also mention Lake. I wear Sidi Megas (wide) but normal Lake shoes on my 13EEs. I can't imagine what an actual wide Lake shoe is like. Swim fins come to mind...

Sidi, with their "mega" models. I have wide feet, and Sidi was the only shoe I could find that fit my foot properly.

I bought a pair of Diadoras (jet racers or something like that) online in my usual shoe size. The length was good but they were so wide that I couldn't get them snug even with the straps done up all the way.

Bont makes one of the wider shoes I've come across. Not always easy to find, but check them out.

Of course there's always Rocket 7 or D2 .

I've recently purchased a set of Bont vaypor + in a wide. I've got a pretty detailed review on them. They are pretty wide for sure and are heat moldable. I'm liking them a lot so far.

I wear Specialized Comp Road. However, many (most?) brands make their shoes in wide sizes. The hard part is finding them in a brick-and-mortar store so you can try them on and dial in the correct size.

I've got wide feet, its a curse for shoe shopping. I use Shimano SH-R088 and after 3 hours or so I have to loosen the straps in the front foot area. Don't forget that your foot expands throughout the day just slightly, much like the discs in your back. Warm up first, then tighten.

I have found the Louis Garneau Ergo Air to work well with my feet, which are wide in the forefoot and narrow in the heel.

You're in Florida? Try some Lakes - real leather, real ventilation. Helluva lot better than the impenetrable plastic that Sidis are made from.

Hell, I wear my Sidis in the winter when it's cold. Nice to not have to worry about shoe covers until it gets down almost into the 30s...

Swim fins, ha! Yeah, that's what I've got, swim fins. I wear an EEEE in tennis shoes. I've looked briefly online at shoes and everything is medium or wide. Wouldn't work for me. Glad this popped up so I can subscribe for the future if I should find myself in the market for pedals and shoes.

Steel toe boots for work are the worst. All I can find is extra wide (EEE) and they aren't wide enough. I had to settle with extra wide and couldn't last a few hours at work until I relaced them and skipped the first 3 holes at the foot. I have them laced only up the ankle so they aren't so tight and I end up with plantar fasciitis for 6 months of pain again.

I have the Shimano RO-88 Wide:

Shimano R088 Wide Road Shoes > Apparel > Shoes and Footwear > Road Cycling Shoes | Jenson USA

I use them with Specialized "Blue" insoles. The stock insoles are wimpy, with no arch support.
I like them, overall. Good price, too.

I too have wide feet.

I've owned:
* Specialized Pro Wide
* Sidi Mega
* Lake 236c Wide
* Shimano R320 Wide
* Semi Custom Riivo
* Fizik R1 (not wide enough)
* Bont A3 (not wide enough)
* Northwave Evolution (not wide enough)

My first pair of Specialized were great. But the sole broke, and the new pair were not as good. Specialized had redesigned them, and I did not like them.

Sidi's just don't work for me. I could never find a size that fit right. It always seemed to me that a 44 Mega was really just a 46.

Lake - I had the 236 which had a BOA behind the heel. I did not like how the BOA worked. I could never get it to hold well.

Shimano R320 - This is not, IMO, a true wide shoe. Shimano simply puts a semi-rigid piece of foam over its normal last. This created too much room for movement of my feet, and I had to ratchet things down too much to keep things stable. I was not a fan.

I know Bont makes wide versions, but they are not a standard item, i.e. you have to special order them, and that makes it harder to return them. So I never went that route. I did try the regular width Bonts, and I could not mold them wide enough.

Laslty, I recently purchased a semi-custom pair of Riivo shoes. They are awesome. Way wider than anything else. I am quite happy with them.

Surprisingly, the part of FL I live in is not a popular cycling area. At least, what few LBS's exist have very limited selections. I wanted to try Lakes, but couldn't find anyone near me (+/- 2 hr drive) who carried them. That said, I've been thoroughly pleased with my Sidis. I've got the Genius 6.6 that have the carbon vent sole, and I have not once felt that my feet were even remotely hot. For me, they work well.
