Seein' as how the temp got up into the 50's today and the sun is inexplicably staying out an hour later than it was last week (the physical world isn't normally that discontinuous), I took the opportunity to go for a quick spin after work. Dodged quite a few potholes too. Had to dodge them carefully because I didn't want to trash the spiffy new sew-ups on the Moto.

The bike? Yowza! It's a winner. Quick to accelerate, quick to turn, quick to stop. I took it up one really steep hill as a test. It passed. The Masi finally has a bike it can converse intelligently with.

Last evening. Halfway through a 72.5 km loop

No idea what was going on, but they were setting up a stage with enough amps and speakers for Woodstock in a town of a couple thousand, if that.

They could have been heard from the next town over. We have friends who live just a block away. Glad I didn't have to be there for the show.

I spent a couple days in Portland with my wife. I got out on Monday and rode to Multnomah falls on the Historic Columbia River Highway. It's a great ride with not much traffic. The weather was a mixed bag, but dry for the most part.

I rode from the along the river for a few miles before getting to Troutdale and the Columbia River Hwy. Probably a couple hundred of these Floating homes out there. I like the garages..




The road winds for a few more miles before reaching the top of the hill, and 'The Portland Womens Forum'. I'm betting there's a story behind that name.. The views of the Gorge here are pretty dang nice.

The road snakes back down to the bottom before getting to Multonmah Falls. There are several Big waterfalls along the way, as well as many smaller falls running off the side of the hills/cliffs. They had a big Snowfall in the last couple weeks, and all of the falls were 'exploding' on Monday. I was really cool riding along seeing/hearing all of the runoff.







I reached Multnomah Falls, and then it started raining. The squall lasted close to a half hour. I Took cover in the information center and had a bite to eat. The falls are 620 feet tall. Everything is green around here.

After the rain let up, I headed back. The roads were wet until I got back up on top, and then the sun came out.






It was a really awesome ride, and I got back just in time to go out for a nice dinner with my wife. Great day.
On the drive home yesterday, My wife snapped this picture. Mid 50s Ford towing a trailer of probably the same vintage. Pretty slick

^ As usual, the fendered bike is the right choice for this part of the country, this time of year.

Nice pics; I never made it out that far by bike when I lived in PDX years ago, but I was a bit of a loaf. I do remember on car trips out that way with my wife, thinking, "What a cool bike trip this would be" but anything over 10 miles seemed pretty daunting at the time.

Yeah, the fenders kept me dry, even if I wasn't dressed for the occasion. It is a great road to ride, not much traffic at all. The round trip is 60 miles from the airport. The wind was blowing from the west, so i got beat up pretty good along Marine View Drive on the last 10 miles.

My first full commute of the year today. 56 miles R/T.
Very nice this afternoon, I rode home without wearing a jacket. Another first for 2014..
Leaving Bellevue, here is I90 trail heading to issaquah

I climb up and over the Sammamish Plateau into the lover Snoqualmie Valley

And enjoy the views as I head for the hills over there..

I climb up into the upper valley and get on the Snoqualmie Valley Trail just on the other side of the old millpond and ride the remaining miles home on the gravel trail.

Ride to one of the local cheese makers.

It's been a dry winter here in California. We finally got some decent rains in early March and the hills are at last turning green.
The cheese I bought today may have come from these cows.

Too bad that every time the fine bottle of Bordeaux and the fine tubular tire argue over that portion of my paycheck that I can spend on luxuries the tubular always wins.

I commuted yesterday on my Surly. being a tough guy I ignored the "flash freeze warning". 3 blocks from home my front wheel washed out on some black ice. I hit the deck and slid for 10 feet ripped my jeans and my sugoi jacket. I was pissed, but didn't get hurt and didn't break anything on my Surly. I did have to listen to my wife say; "I told you so."

I commuted today on the Surly; I am incident free for 24 hrs.

I'm flying in to Ft. Myers tomorrow for a much needed vacation from work and weather. I'll post some pics of blue water, palms and sunshine soon.

JJS, enjoy your trip! Glad you weren't hurt in your spill.

I got home from work early enough this evening that I could take a bike out. Of course it was still rush hour so I took the UO8 because it has lights. After riding the Motobecane and the Masi and the Bianchi exclusively (except for the tandem) lately, the UO8 felt downright heavy when I dragged it up from the basement. Nevertheless it rode sweetly. I keep re-learning why I've kept it all these years.

I got in 10.02 miles, timed it so I'd get home before dusk. By the time I got home my feet and hands were feeling cold. Well, no wonder, the slightly sensationalistic thermometer on our back deck was reading 26degF.

Unfortunately I had one minor problem. With the sun in my eyes as I approached an entrance ramp to a big highway I hit a pothole really hard. The tire didn't flat (thanks to 105psi, a reason to keep them pumped up!) but it put a flat spot in the rim. Bummer. Ruined a perfectly fine MA2. Oh well, I guess I'll be building a wheel.

On Sunday I fly to London. The wheel will have to keep. But I won't be able to commute on the UO8 when I return home until I've had time to rebuild the wheel.
