Bump while Riding in the Wheel?

Looks like another of my brilliant buys on craigslist or yard sales. I just mounted this wheel, Araya front quick release 27 x 1 1/4. It's got a pretty pronounced bump while riding. I'm guessing it's in the rim, not in the tire and I don't think it's from hitting the brake shoe. It has barely any wobble. I'll have to check it more closely after I ride it home. I just bought the damn thing and didn't look it over real closely before I bought it. Might not have found it anyway. Thak you.

You can see it, we can't-
Flip the bike upside down and spin the wheel.
Observe the distance between the rim and brake pads as a "reference".
Ditto with the tire & pads.
My guess is a poorly mounted tire.
Your tire should also have a fine mold line close to the rim. It should be a consistent distance from the rim all the way around.

What's the question here?

Try lifting the front wheel off the ground and spin it. Watch the rim near the brake pads. Is it the rim or the tire that has the bump?

Thanks for the advice. Have spun it a few times and checked it, didn't find anything. I will turn it upside down and check it more closely.

It could be that the rim is out of round; you would check that by spinning the wheel while looking at it from the side. Rims sometimes get dented when the rider tries to ride up a curb, and the rim edges splay out where it hits the curb.

Simple solution:
cut all the spokes, send the rim to the recycle center, throw out the tire and tube, get new Velocity Synergy rim, new Wheelsmith spokes and nipples, new Schwalbe Marathon tire and tube; assemble. And your are ready to go [h=2][/h]

a bump you can feel
is almost always a problem with the tire

either improper mounting or cut cords in the casing

a wheel has to be pretty badly out of true to feel it
but a relatively small problem with the tire can easily be felt

Turtletop, pay particular attention to the way the tire is mounted near the valve stem. Sometimes the valve stem isn’t situated properly, which in turn causes the tire to bulge at that point.

Do I hear a loud BANG in the near future? When the tube pops out from under the bead and explodes?

Confession:

I have to own up, sorry I've taken so long to get back. My tire was losing air; I found out on the way back home. It was a pretty fast leak. When it was pumped up it was fine. I'm embarrassed, but it's the truth. It's actually good news that it wasn't the wheel. It sure didn't feel like a tire that was losing air though.

Thanks everybody for the help.
