The problem you have is not the bolts, because the levers will work with either M4.5 and M5, depending on what bosses you have. Your problem will be the 'axle covers'. You need the ones for "A-type braze ons", like the ones I mentioned in my post, above. With those, you can mount 6207 friction shifters, even the clamp-on variety - which will come with M4.5 bolts. If you decide to go for something more modern, you'll still need the axle covers to mount later shifters, or cable stops if you go with STIs.

Interesting you find the 58 too big, because I'm only 1/2" taller than you and on my 58, the seatpost is almost all the way out. As far as reach, I've found that SOMA Highway One bars, with 75mm reach, reduce the reach to the drops just a bit, which is more back friendly to my 63 year old body than older bars with their 95mm reach.

I was able to get a pic of my '85 Ironman on today's ride. Pretty much original spec, including the 'Bernard Hinault' model Selle Italia Turbo saddle. I did swap in a set of aero brake levers, Shimano 6209s, just a few years newer. I haven't been able to find 6207 non-aero levers with black hoods that aren't disintegrating.



These are the levers I mentioned above - 6207s from a clamp-on set, with those 'axle covers' from the Belgian guy who has all the NOS parts. His shipping charge is high, but I ordered a couple things and he only charged the shipping for one.

Used @canklecat advice. '85 -'89 Ironman. The '85 and '89 are road bike specific, while the rest are triathlon specific. My favorite is the two tone red and white '86 followed closely by the blue and white marble fade '89.

RT said you have all the years Ironman but you need the "Precursor". It is my most fun bike to ride. Thanks RT...will I ever stop thanking that guy? That's a rhetorical question.

Update: cleaning up nicely. It’s been ridden hard and put away wet for sure. Will need a few happy dabs of rust neutralizer here and there. BB, chainstays, eyelets, etc. And it’s got a ding or two. Lots of character and I dig it. Would be inclined to follow up with some brush on enamel after in those spots. Digging the original paint though. Think ill slow down until I can take a ride over to Vic’s classic cycles in Louisville. Will oogle at his rides and see what he can suggest from the part bin if anything. Thanks all for the seemingly critical heads up and solutions to the shifter mounts.

This (precursor) was "gifted" to me by RT , came to me as a frame / fork / headset . I tried to keep it as stock "looking" as possible . Had to get rid of it because I can't ride a 58 . It was a fun build , rccardr gave me a heads up on the 4.5mm 5mm DT shifter screws .

This is the 20th anniversary of the Sportsbackers Marathon Training Team. One of the local news stations did a story as a lead in to the Richmond Marathon this weekend. It was the Halloween costume run on Saturday. The person in the yellow shirt, orange shorts and pink/purple tutu briefly at the start and a couple more times in the video is me. The 77 year old retired head coach Lynn Anderson in the video is still the heart and soul of the team. She did the virtual Boston Marathon last month. Still out there weekends coaching/doing her thing. She is so well loved that the team/former team members donated over $3k for a bench on the VA Capital Trail named in her honor. The retired coach Don Garber got a bench as well.
Anyway, there is a rare glimpse of me in the wild. You can put a face to my posts.

I guess it was cold there. We had a cold spell here last week in the 50s. In the 70s this week. Gonna ride my '88 Ironman this weekend.

Really good running weather. Started around 34. Finished in the low 40s. Had a base layer, gaiter, gloves and ear warmers on. Took them off except for the base layer around 2 miles in. The running clothing rule in this area is dress for temps 20 degrees above the actual temps. Better to be cold the first mile and good the rest of the run than toasty the first mile and hot for the rest of the run. That's adjustable, of course depending on cloudiness, wind, etc.

Around here tutus are a cyclocross thing. T-rex costumes are for marathons.

88 Expert. I just finished the build and haven't yet ridden it. I will be much more likely to reach for an orange bike than one with a red/white fade. I did one or two things differently from last time. Mainly the shorter stem. My body likes a tall frame with shortish reach. It also now sports the Team Pro, which I'm determined to finally break in.

The initial plan for this bike was to put the dynamo front wheel on it, and permanent lights. That will likely be carried through with, once the kinks are ironed out.
