[raingear] Avoiding "windbreaker effect"?

Hello

I don't wear a helmet in the city, and was wondering what solutions people use to avoid the dreaded "windbreaker effect" when looking sideways:

Depending on how heavy the rain is, I either wear a under the hood or just wrap an elastic band around the head saudi-style :-)

What do you guys use?

Thank you.

I wear a helmet and my head gets wet and I don't care. The way I see it is, you can't towel off a head injury.

Just let your head get wet. Hoods are not ideal on a bike because of the problem you mention.

Your wool beret is not enough?

A few years ago I saw pictures of a helmet shaped like a beret..

Winter, it dumps an inch + in a day here, So in my front pannier,
I have a Sou-wester an offshore foul weather Hat and a HD cycle rain cape.

I'd rather not know. It sounds bad, though.

From context, I'm guessing it's where you have a hood on and it prevents you from looking sideways.

You can wear a showercap or helmet cover over your helmet.

I don't want to nag or badger and get off topic, but why would you want to risk a head injury by not wearing a helmet? I realize biking at all sets us up for severe injury if we collide with anything, but not wearing a helmet puts you at all the more risk that you'll spend the rest of your life (if it continues past the accident) unable to do or enjoy the things you used to because you have a brain injury.

Not spending a lifetime bound to a wheelchair > letting the wind blow through my hair.

Sorry to get all preachy, I'm sure someone will have a bristled response to this. I hope you find a good solution to the windbreaker effect.

I've found a helmet over the hood to be the perfect solution.

Me too.

You get full rain coverage (instead of rain rolling off the helmet and down your neck), and the helmet straps keep the hood secured relative to your head, preventing it blocking your vision when you turn your head.

Ohhhhhhhh.

Wouldn't hoods be frowned upon (as headphones) as they limit hearing? Or is the internet's hypocrisy showing again?

I find a helmet with a visor helps me but I also tend to take off my glasses when it starts raining which helps a lot.

I have two helmets, one is a winter/rain helmet, I taped over the vents on it. The taped vents keep me dryer/warmer than the untaped vents on my summer helmet.

I just have to switch my Take a Look mirror to which ever helmet I am wearing for the day.

I have a skateboard helmet that I use in the winter for the same reason. Those have very few, and small, vents.

Yes... if it's really pouring down, I'll put my rain cape hood under the helmet. The hood fits over, but rear and side visibility suffers.

I wouldn't say it's perfect though. Go 2 miles and you are pretty wet under the hood.

Simple solution for me is a ball cap with visor under my helmet. The visor keeps the rain out of my eyes and off my glasses.

Rain is the reason that places outside Australia have trees and other plants. It's probably also part of the reason why bunny rabbits aren't a national disaster here.
