Project 4:45

In 1996, at the age of 35 I went to elite nationals and rode a 4:45 individual pursuit at T-Town. As a side note I also was part of a team pursuit squad that rode 4:31 for the bronze medal. (Myself, Larry Nolan, Dave Bailey and Manny Rodriguez in the final)

22 years later using the excuse of needing to practice TP with a couple of new guys to get ready for geezer worlds, I'm going to LA again next week for elite nationals.

My goal is to match my times from 1996. I am sure that if you sent me to T-Town and put me on that same bike, skinsuit, helmet, etc. that I would not be able to go 4:45. BUT, my current pursuit bike (Specialized Shiv) is faster than my steel custom job of 1996, not to mention, indoors (double disks!), wood track vs. concrete, PI skinsuit, etc. Basically, it's kind of an experiment to see if equipment improvements will make up for aging. Last July I rode a 4:53 4km outdoors at Hellyer park so I think I've got a pretty good shot at it.

Same story with the team pursuit. The team that we won the 55-64 group with last year is changing this year. Larry Nolan and I are returning, but we're adding in Chris Carlson and Curtis Tolson into the mix. Don Langley won't be at worlds this year and Shaun Wallace is still deciding. Our goal is to make it into the medal round. We're hoping for the bronze and we're hoping to go 4:30 or hopefully better if we can get our act together. Looking at last years results, 3rd place rode 4:28 and seeing as how the 4th place team has the exact same time I'm guessing they got caught. 4:28 might be a stretch, but not getting caught by a 4:28 seems reasonable.

I am pretty excited about the masters worlds change to make the TP 4km, I just wish they would have done the same for the IP this year instead of next. 2km is NOT a pursuit. It's a long kilo.

Also, it will be interested to see how teams ride the 4km at worlds. Lots of teams went with the tactic of one person doing a long 3 or 4 lap pull and the pulling out for the 3km TP. I don't think that will work so well for 4km.

Good luck Kevin, I think if you've done 4:53 at Hellyer you should definitely get 4:45 or better in LA.

Just ride 2 really fast Kilo's back to back and that'll solve the 2k issue
