Rest Day Insomnia

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd suggest Hammer CBD oil (25mg). It's completely free of THC. You won't notice a thing taking it, other than you fall asleep very easily when physically tired, then sleep really well.

The times I notice it being hard to fall asleep after a few days of hard riding, I also lacked protein (from food not supplements) . Reducing the carbs, intaking decent fiber & making sure I maintained a healthy amount of protein put my groggy sleepless nights to rest.

My "Monday night syndrome" with the high heart rate and panic attack feeling was surely due to high cortisol levels from overreaching, and also overtraining. I would now (age 59) put it down to riding too hard on Saturday and not resting Sunday. With just one super hard day (eg 140km in 4.5 hours) my sleep isn't any worse than usual, but adding a *second* hard ride in a row is what puts me into "Monday night syndrome". I never completely shook that effect, but found that NO alcohol and NO caffeine helped a lot. I guess if you're feeling like that on Monday you shouldn't ride so hard Sunday, *even* if you feel good after your Saturday ride. More rest days, better hydration.
I have the *exact* same symptoms. I don't drink, and the only caffeine I have is a cup or two of coffee in the mornings. Training is usually Tuesday-Thursday with shorter 90-120 min rides with specific work either on a trainer or a pretty closed section of road. A long ride Saturday (3-4 hours), and sometimes I'll ride Sunday if I have time and feel good. Fridays and Mondays are my guaranteed rest days, and I struggle to "feel tired" those nights (a luxury problem for a 40yr business owner and father of two I think). I have too much energy to fall asleep when I want, and usually wake up early the next day too.

My thought is that the insomnia is part of the super-compensation from training. You're teaching your body to adapt to massive amounts of CNS stimulation during training and then your body still has to be able to continue with the rest of the day. As soon as you back off it's like the reverse of caffeine withdrawal. When I used to race in my 20's, I had trouble sleeping the nights leading up to the race because I was usually way backed off of my training as well. I have also had the "post race insomnia" as well, also due to probably the massive amount of CNS stimulation and the body not being able to figure out if there's still a lion chasing you 6 hours later. But the post race insomnia is from literally going 100% at races and burying myself to try to win, and I think totally different. It usually leads to an epic crash the following day where I don't want to get off the couch!

The flip side is being lazy and just doing half-a$$ workouts 2-3 days a week leads me down a path to sleeping lots of hours mostly because I’m out of shape.
