What are those envelope icons on the left?
They show "clickable" (mouse pointer changes) on my desktop browser but clicking on them doesn't seem to do anything. Some are yellow and some are red - does that mean anything?

I'll take a stab at it.
Envelope open, unread messages.
Envelope reddish.... hot subject, lots of activity.
Clickable so the web master can just marvel about which members will click anything..... I'm probably at the top of that list.
Might be nice if they had a ghost or a zombie climbing out of the envelope if the thread has a new reply after no activity for a long period! <grin>

I hadn't previously paid attention to those. I believe the arrow indicates that you've responded to this post in the past. Which is handy to know.
