Local city wide garage sales produced some free pile gems.
Gitane Inter Club with front end damage...

It's been a long dry spell for the total scrounge, but this morning after dropping my kid off at school, I saw this Kuwahara Shasta leaning against some garbage cans down the street from my house. Interesting bike. Deore, but unfortunately the crank and pedals have been replaced. Lots of branding on the individual parts: K on the Strong seatpost; K on the Nitto stem; Kuwahara headset. Not to mention some cool frame details. Just a little different. I was happy to find it, and even happier when the bench vise was holding the seatpost, and I was holding the frame!

Specialized Globe Tour 1
Found this in a garbage pile with 3 other bikes outside my apartment building. Caught my interest for some reason so I rolled it in beside my car and surveyed the mess. Most of the cables had been pulled from there mounts and one of the front fender bolts had the head broken off. The bike was completely incased with many years of parkade cement dust. Pumped up the tires and it sat for a month while I was busy with my other bikes. Last week I attempted to see what I had.
My guess is this was bought in 2011 driven once or twice and then left to gather dust. Replaced the broken fender bolt and voila a brand new 12 year old bike. Not my type of bike but definitely enjoyed cruising around the city.

Did pretty good at the scrapyard this morning. There was a Rock Hopper and a Schwinn World Tourist sticking out of the pile. Both frames where damaged, but I got some parts off, And.... there was a Park PCS workstand! My cup runith over..
P.S. The Suntour Perfect freewheel came off the hub easy enough. The hub didn't survive, but it was a steel cheapie with a bent axle, but I did salvage a nice set of cones.

Scored this Worldrider Sigma racer from the bike pile at the recycling center.
Barely used by the look of the tires, chainrings and chain. Full Shimano 600 groupset that predates indexing and before Shimano lost their mind...

Paid $80 for this early 80s Miyata 310. Not a screaming deal but the bike is in terrific shape with what look to be all original parts and good tires. It won't be much work to get it on the road for my nephew.

Specialized Sequoia
Although not really on the way to the dump, it was clearly being ignored and neglected. Small (47cm) frame size 1982 Sequoia complete and original with the exception of the bars and brake levers. A bit of rust on some fasteners, but nothing that a quick dip in Evaporust won’t fix.

I've "saved" a few free-on-Facebook bikes, though most have not been worth much more than parts. The actual good ones always seem to get snatched up within about 10 minutes. Still trying to get the bottom bracket off of an old Panasonic Sport that could be a decent bike....if I could ever get those gravelly bearings replaced. I've been wrestling with the bottom bracket off and on for about 6 months and doesn't seem to be very interested in coming off. Not very encouraging.
But last week I found an old 1991 (?) Specialized Hard Rock Cruz leaning against the dumpster. The chain and cassette were caked orange with rust and the gel-type comfort seat was cracked and oozing and generally looked unpleasant for sitting. And the thumb shifter for the front derailleur had a broken piece on top. But other than that, it didn't look too bad. Walked it home and scrubbed the chain and cassette and got them servicable, and the suntour shifters still work, though they're a bit hard to shift and probably need new cabling. But it's a really fun ride, if a bit small for me.

I'm a year late to post this but I found this at a moving sale for $10. 1984 Bridgestone 300, odometer said about 500 miles at the time but who knows if that was accurate.

It's a carry strap to go up and down stairs to get on and off the train if needed. I now have a bike on either end of the commute so it's theoretically easier these days.

I have a black chrome 1987 High Sierra that I picked up last year. It is one of favorites, a really nice riding bike. So, when another '87 showed up on FB Marketplace today for $20, I didn't hesitate to go grab it. Equally as dirty and neglected as my first one, but appears to be in good shape overall.
