Why suddenly the threads on saddles?

Leather, Brooks-like : Ideale, Belt.

Other: Terry Liberator. The plastic saddle on my Bianchi. The original plastic saddle on my old Fuji.

Actually, except for really smushy, padded saddles, I can ride just about anything... at least for the 7 miles to work. If the saddle is that uncomfortable, I do more standing.

Well, I don't think Brooks are silly.. I have one on my fixed gear, and used to have one on the Aurora, and like them, but my favorite non-brooks would be the Fizik Arione that's on my Bianchi.

Not a Brooks, but just as good, my commuter saddle is a Persons-Majestic no.77.

I have Fizik Vitesse Sport saddles on both my bikes. They feel great under my bum.

I had a Specialized Body Geometry saddle I really liked before I got the B17, but the Specialized saddle got really uncomfortable after about 20 minutes. It reminded me of the saddle on my last BMW motorcycle, great at first but then become a real PITA.

I used to have Brooks B17s on my bikes until I tried a Fizik Vitesse. Now I have Vitesse saddles on all of my road bikes (4). It is more comfortable for me than a B17 and weighs half as much, plus it's less expensive. The Vitesse is shaped like an Aliante but is about 1 cm wider and costs much less. For some reason, Fizik markets the Vitesse as a women's saddle but it is a nice saddle for anyone who likes a wider saddle.

I have a Rido R2 on my commuterized mountain bike. Works well enough for short commutes.

My B17 was $89; and if I didn't like it, I could've Craigslisted it for about $80-90.

But I've also got a NIB Swift for $130 -- the guy ordered it at shop's cost and got something else before it arrived (or something like that).

Anyway... Non-Brooks saddles that I had and liked were an Arione and an Aliante. I put the Arione on the road bike where my riding position changed often, and the Aliante on the hybrid since my riding position stayed pretty much the same.

Fizik. arionne and arionne 2 were both nice. They break in like leather without the cracking of leather.

Have you priced some of the bikes in peoples signatures? Some folks spend 10K (and that is not uncommon) on the bike whats 100-300 on the perfect saddle?

Or, heck, a $400 bike with a $100 saddle -- as long as it's comfy, of course -- is nicer to ride than a $10K bike with any uncomfortable saddle... and it's still $9500 cheaper.

Saddles, shoes, and shorts are where I just buy what I like. There are plenty of other ways where going by price doesn't matter.

IMO it is very important to make sure you are comfortable at the contact points of your bike. A $100+ saddle that is comfortable and will keep you riding the bike is way better than a $30 saddle that kills your butt and makes you not want to ride!

I have yet to find a foam seat i truly like ive never tried brooks, im thinking about it though, one of favorites though and i no longer have ( i needed the money) is specialized toupe 143ti, it wasn't the best seat for long distances but for shorter rides i really liked it. Ive never been a fan of soft seats.

I guess I should have made that point as well. Its not always about money when it becomes a passion.

IMHO its the most important part of a bike, so why not spend some extra money to be comfortable

Right. I mean, I don't really mind saying how much I paid for a saddle that I like, but I hate the act of saying it. It's like I'm saying, "My butt is worth $$$, so you cheap-saddle-buyers must not care about your butts at all, so on you."

What I try to say is, it doesn't matter how much you spend when you get something you really like and will use a lot. If you go cheap and don't like the result, you won't remember what you did with the money you saved, but you'll remember how much you hate whatever it is you got.

I bought my B17 with a cheap mindset, knowing that if I didn't like it, I could sell it right away and not lose any more than ten bucks. Brooks saddles don't languish on CL very long around here. And, I figured that if I liked it, then it would be worth it.

Selle Italia Max Flite, or SLR Gel Flow Lady. The Selle Italia womens model saddles are closer in width to my Brooks, with a similar flat profile across the back. If I'm gonna ride a hardshell, it's gonna be comfy; even if it is pink and white with embroidered flowers on it. Sasquatch can be a pretty princess if he wants to, dammit.

I'll argue the statement that foam saddles "break in". When foam has moulded itself to your shape, it means the cell structure has broken down and no longer does the job of padding you from the plastic (or carbon) shell of the saddle. It's not broken in; it's worn out.

WTB Rocket V Race is pretty comfy, all things considered.

The RANS Sling Mesh seat, on the other hand, is supremely comfortable.

But, that's a seat and not a saddle.

I don't know, I don't like the channel on the rocket v race. Too wide for me. Or I just somehow sit on it wrong.

I sort of liked the fizik vitesse, but then a san marco regal came my way and I swapped out the vitesse after only putting 30 or so miles on it.

Specialized Phenom and Specialized Toupe. I had a Fizik but had to remove it 'cuz I never got comfortable on it.
